JAKARTA, Indonesia: Gov’t Lowers Mount Agung’s Alert Level
Jakarta. The government has lowered the alert level for Mount Agung in Bali as the volcano showed a decrease in activity over the past month, allowing displaced persons to return home.
Mount Agung’s last eruption fell on Jan.17, leading the Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation Center (BNPB) to recommend lowering the volcano’s alert level to three, one notch below the highest alert status, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignatius Jonan said on Saturday (10/02).
The government also reduced the danger zone to a 4 kilometer radius around the crater, Jonan said.
“All of our compatriots who are now in refugee camps can soon return home,” the minister said.
According to latest data from BNPB, about 3,000 residents are currently seeking refuge at displaced persons camps on Bali. Hundreds of thousands of others returned home after the government narrowed the danger zone from 8-10 kilometers to 6 kilometers on Jan. 4.
The volcano first showed signs of activity in September, causing an estimated of Rp 11 trillion ($808 million) in losses due to the disruption of tourism on the holiday island.
“All tourism activity is safe and now there is no volcanic activity to worry about,” Jonan said.
