DU30 MARTIAL LAW: MANILA – Minority senators seek De Lima’s freedom

Members of the minority in the Senate are calling for the release of Senator Leila de Lima from detention.

They say, February 24 (Saturday) will mark her first year of illegal arrest and unjust detention.

The senators filed Senate Resolution # 645 for this purpose.

Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, Francis Pangilinan, Antonio Trillanes, Bam Aquino and Risa Hontiveros signed the resolution.

“As her colleagues in the Senate, we are pained by the reality that a member of this chamber is locked up on trumped-up charges when she should be here with us, engaging us in productive discussions, legislating laws and serving her constituents and our country,” the senators said in a statement.

They describe De Lima as the first political prisoner under the Duterte regime.

The senators recalled she earned the ire of President Duterte when she investigated the Davao Death Squad (DDS) when she was chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).

The senators said she had also angered the present administration when as senator, she launched an inquiry into the so-called extra-judicial killings (EJKs). / The Manila Standard /  posted February 22, 2018 at 11:40 am by Arlene Lim
