Jakarta. Indonesian athlete Lalu Muhammad Zohri clinched the prestigious first place in the 100-meter sprint at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, on Wednesday (11/07).
Zohri finished the race in 10.18 seconds, just by 0.01 seconds slower than the country’s record achieved by Suryo Agung Wibowo during the 2009 Southeast Asian Games.
This was Indonesia’s first appearance in a World U20 Championships final. Prior to the race, Indonesia best performance was an eighth-place finish in the 100-meter heats at the IAAF World U20 Championships inaugural edition in 1986.
“Zohri’s national U20 record will no doubt open the door and pave the way for more,” the IAAF said in a statement.
Zohri’s winning came at the expense of US champions Anthony Schwartz and Eric Harrison, who finished at second and third place, both at 10.22 seconds.
“I’m very happy with my personal best and national junior record. Now, I will prepare for the Asian Games next month. I’m so proud – this was an amazing experience and this is great for my career,” Zohri said in the statement.
