SURAT THANI: A Myanmar housekeeper has received a certificate for her good deeds after returning a huge wad of cash to a Dutch tourist visiting Koh Samui.

The housekeeper found A$11,000 (280,000 baht) in cash inside a plastic box on the stairs of Ark Bar Beach Hotel on Chaweng beach while she was on cleaning duty on Thursday.

She returned the money to the reception desk of the hotel, which contacted the owner.

Bor Phut police checked security camera footage, which captured Alexander Joseph, 31, a tourist from the Netherlands, smoking on the stairs and forgetting to pick up the cash box when he returned to his room.

Hotel general manager Thanaphon Uthaiwannaporn alerted the guest, who checked the box and confirmed that all the money was still inside. The tourist gave the maid $100 to show his appreciation for her good deed.

The governor said on Sunday that the maid, Sawee Let Mau, had helped promote the good image of the resort island.
