Göbekli Tepe

In the southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey, a group of circular and rectangular megalithic structures and carved, T-shaped pillars date to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic. Archaeologists believe the monuments were used for funerary rituals by the people of Upper Mesopotamia between 9,600 and 8,200 B.C.E.

Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai

During the 19th and 20th centuries, the city of Mumbai commissioned Victorian Neo-Gothic and Art Deco buildings as part of an urban planning project. These designs, which also incorporated Indian elements, created a unique architectural style known as Indo-Deco.

Chiribiquete National Park

Known as the “Maloca of the Jaguar,” Chiribiquete National Park is the largest protected area in Colombia, and is considered a sacred area by indigenous communities. More than 75,000 paintings spanning 20,000 years can be found on rock shelters at the bases of the tepuis, or table-top mountains.

Germany’s striking Naumburg Cathedral began construction in 1028, and is renowned for its use of late Romanesque and early Gothic architectural styles.

Caliphate City of Medina Azahara

In southern Spain, the 10th-century Caliphate city of Medina Azahara was the seat of the Caliphate of Córdoba during the Umayyad dynasty, and later destroyed during a civil war. Remains of the city’s roads, bridges, and water systems were rediscovered in the early 20th century, uncovering clues about the Islamic civilization.
