Jakarta. Indonesia’s top Muslim clerical body has called on the police to investigate a religious sect known as Kerajaan Ubur-Ubur, or the Jellyfish Kingdom, in Serang, Banten.

In a statement on Wednesday (15/08), Zainut Tauhid Sa’adi, deputy chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), said the group’s activities may be a scam under the guise of religion.

“The MUI has asked the police to investigate this sect, so people would know the truth,” Zainut said.

He added that the council’s chapter in Serang has also conducted its own investigation into the matter.

According to local media reports, the Jellyfish Kingdom believes the Prophet Muhammad was a woman. Leaders of the sect further claim to be the incarnation of Nyai Roro Kidul, the mythical queen of the Southern Sea, or Indian Ocean.

The Jellyfish Kingdom, led by a couple identified as Aisyah and Rudi, propagates its teachings online.

CNN Indonesia reported that the couple attract followers with stories of hidden treasure kept for Indonesians in a foreign bank.

Police reportedly moved 11 members of the sect from their homes on Tuesday, as neighbors are increasingly disapproving of their presence.
