The Pchum Ben festival (Oct 8 – 10) has seen the Department of Traffic Police and Public Order report 53 traffic accidents country-wide.  These accidents caused 28 deaths and 85 injuries, 65 of which were serious.

This is a minor reduction when compared to the figures of 2017.

The crashes damaged 65 motorbikes, 28 autos and three large trucks.

The causes for the accidents are known: speeding, drunken driving, dangerous overtaking, not staying in one’s lane, and lack of cooperation.

Of the dead, 91 percent did not wear helmets.

The five days from October 6 to 10 had some 20,000 people travel with the free city buses to their hometowns and return to Phnom.

Prime Minister Hun Sen had instructed City hall to provide buses for armed forces servicemen, civil servants, workers and the general public. City Hall had 215 busses running from the capital to the 17 provinces. /Mom Kunthear / Khmer Times
