The Labour Ministry announced on Friday (Feb. 1) that Japan will help augment the efficiency/knowledge of Cambodian construction workers.
Ith Samheng, minister of Labour, met with delegates of the Japan Cambodia Interactive Association (JCIA) at the ministry, and noted that currently the construction sector in Cambodia is booming.
Currently, the ministry and Japanese officials are reviewing existing cooperation agreements in order to expand the labour market and open employment opportunities for Cambodians. After the meeting, the minister said that Cambodia and Japan will sign a cooperative agreement on specialized workers in March.

“More than 9,000 Cambodian labourers work in Japan and we hope that the figure will double next year,” said Mr Samheng.
Cambodian workers can hone their construction skills in Japan and use their gained knowledge to be more efficient and, equally if not more important, raise the awareness for safety on the Kingdom’s construction sites – lack of safety often leads to loss of life, the minister remarked.
JCIA director Fumio Yamada said that he and more than 400 construction company representatives studied soil types on location before determining if laying building foundations there was advisable. Many soil samples were sent to Japan for analysis.
.
“These construction companies accepted more than 300 Cambodian workers for construction work in Japan,” he said. “”Cambodian workers will be skilled for work in the construction industry after [on-the-job] learning in Japan and will use their skills to develop the construction sector in Cambodia.”
Mr Yamada wants to attract more Japanese investors to the Kingdom.
