ARTS-PAINTINGS: Exhibition showcases works by women artists

HCM CITY — A collection of 105 art works by 102 women artists are on display at the HCM City Fine Arts Association.

The exhibition titled Xuân (Spring) includes paintings and sculptures in different media, including oil, acrylic, water colour, lacquer and pottery.

The works’ themes are about landscape, lifestyle, people, portrait and flowers, created by veteran and young artists from the association and the HCM City University of Fine Arts.

Nguyễn Thị Tâm of the association, 82, best known for her paintings of lotuses and the country’s landscapes, is displaying Năm Mới (New Year) featuring images of pink cherry blossoms in the sun.

Tâm, a native of the Mekong Delta province of Tiền Giang, graduated in oil painting from the Gia Định Fine Arts College in 1958. She has taken part in 20 solo and group exhibitions in Việt Nam, France, the US and Germany, among others.

Đặng Ái Việt introduces her still painting called Hoa Xuân (Flowers of Spring) which includes a vase of a bunch of lilies in bright colours of red, orange and yellow.

The 71-year-old Việt spent all her life travelling from HCM City to Hà Nội to paint portraits of Vietnamese Heroic Mother. Her paintings have been exhibited across Việt Nam.

Veteran artists of the association like Việt Kim Quyên and Trần Thùy Linh are also showcasing their paintings along with young artists from the university Nguyễn Trí Minh Thư and Lư Thị Bảo Ngọc.

Thư’s oil painting is of a beautiful and modern woman called She, while Ngọc’s ceramic sculpture featured a young woman called Chị Gái Ở Thôn (Sister in the Countryside).

Visitor Lê Văn Tiến of District 3 said: “The exhibition is a chance to know more about women and their spirit through beautiful paintings and sculpture. I admire their talents.”

The exhibition runs until March 16. The association is at 218A Pasteur Street in District 3. — VNS
