TEACHERS across the Belait District gathered at Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Primary School (SRPSBSOAS), Kuala Belait on Tuesday to learn differentiated teaching and learning methods as part of the Department of Schools’ ‘Live Differentiation Teaching Programme’.

“Lesson observation and the differentiation of tasks among students [are among the activities carried out during the programme],” said SRPSBSOAS Headmistress Hajah Nor Zurina binti Haji Assim.

“[The teachers] will also hold discussions in the meeting shortly after the activities on the pros and cons of differentiated learning and areas where the system can be improved upon.”

Hajah Nor Zurina added, “Other things that we have to take into account include the difficulty of the topics being taught, as well as where the students are with regards to their academic and learning abilities.”.

The one-day programme, held for teachers under the Cluster Six of Schools from the Belait District, aimed to enable the teachers to use a variety of teaching strategies tailored to their students’ individual learning abilities.

Two teachers from Anderson Primary School, Singapore also attended the programme as part of its school’s twinning programme.

“Education is not a ‘one size fits all’ system, but rather a tailor-made experience to ensure that all students are exposed to the right and accurate amount of learning with respect to their current abilities,” Hajah Nor Zurina added.

“At the end of the day, we are all striving to make the classroom learning experience a great one for students and equipping teachers with these knowledge in differentiated learning to make it happen.”
