YANGON : Myanmar to compete in ASEAN School Games

Myanmar will compete in 11th ASEAN School Games to be hosted by Indonesia in July even though the number of competitors has not been finalised.

The sporting event will take place from July 17-25 in Central Java’s Semarang and hundreds of students from 10 ASEAN member countries will compete.

“We’ve informed the Department of Basic Education about selecting athletes this month. Students from Sports and Physical Education Department will take part in our selections,” said U Khun Jar Aung, a director in the Sports and Physical Education Department.

At present, Myanmar’s sports teams cannot announce the categories of sports they will take part in, and it they will decide depending on ability of potential participants.

The ASEAN School Sports Council (ASSC) is planning to feature athletics, basketball, badminton, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, pencak silat and tennis during the games.

The sporting event was first held in 2009 but Myanmar athletes joined the games only in 2017.

Since participating in the games, Myanmar has won only five medals in last 2018 event.

.It won one gold, two silver and two bronze medals in last year’s event after sending a contingent of 79 Myanmar atheletes who competed in seven sports – athletics, badminton, table tennis, gymnastics, tennis, swimming and sepak takraw.

Mine Nyi Nyi Moe won gold in the 5000-metre walk, Lwe Zar won silver in the women’s 3000-metre run, Zin May Htet silver in women’s 3000-metre walk, Zar Ni Tun bronze in the men’s 3000-metre run and another bronze in women;s table tennis.
