Brunei trail Mongolia 2-0 in first leg of World Cup qualifying

BRUNEI Darussalam’s national football team have it all to do in the second leg of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 1 after they went down 2-0 to Mongolia at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on Thursday.

Mongolia’s Norjmoo Tsedenbal marked the start of his captaincy with a curled free-kick to present his side a ninth-minute lead with the Brunei goalkeeper Haimie Anak Nyaring rooted to the spot.

Rocked by the goal, the visitors were given a rare break and their overtures forward nearly materialised into something substantial, but Adi Said flashed his shot wide.

Mongolia’s Naranbold Nyam-Osor brilliantly skipped his marker and tried to slot in the near post but his attempt was well covered by Haimie.

Mongolia’s Enkhbileg Purevdorj saw a decent attempt from outside the box fly wide as they came close of doubling the lead.

The visitors switched off at the back in the 69th minute as Naranbold capitalised with a precise finish to double his side’s lead.

The two teams will meet again in the second leg at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas on June 11.

Meanwhile, the Mongolian national football team safely landed at the Brunei International Airport yesterday evening. The Brunei team arrived in the wee hours of this morning.
