CAIRO (AFP) – The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday (Feb 19) hailed “tremendous progress” in the fight against the deadly new coronavirus since it emerged in China in December.

.

“We are making tremendous progress in a short period of time … trends are very encouraging but we are not at a turning point yet,” said Dr Richard Brennan, WHO’s regional emergency director, at a press conference in Cairo.

The death toll from the Covid-19 virus jumped past 2,000 on Wednesday, almost all of them in mainland China, where 74,185 cases of infection have been confirmed.

THE EPICENTER: CHINA

BEIJING (AFP, REUTERS, BLOOMBERG) – The death toll from China’s new coronavirus epidemic jumped to 2,112 on Thursday (Feb 20) after 108 more people died in Hubei province, the hard-hit epicentre of the outbreak.

Most of the deaths were in the provincial capital Wuhan, where the virus first emerged in December, according to the daily update from the Hubei health commission.

Wuhan reported 88 new deaths, down from 116 on Tuesday. A total of 1,585 people in Wuhan have now died from the virus.

Hubei province had 349 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infections on Wednesday, the province’s health commission said on Thursday, down from 1,693 cases a day earlier.

That was a sharp decline from nearly 1,700 the previous day as China again changed its method for counting infections and took the total accumulated number of confirmed cases in Hubei to 62,031.

CHIVAGO, IL., USA- Coronavirus spreads more like flu than Sars: Chinese study

CHICAGO (REUTERS) – Scientists in China who studied nose and throat swabs from 18 patients infected with the new coronavirus say it behaves much more like influenza than other closely related viruses, suggesting it may spread even more easily than previously believed.

In at least in one case, the virus was present even though the patient had no symptoms, confirming concerns that asymptomatic patients could also spread the disease.

Although preliminary, the findings published on Wednesday (Feb 19) in the New England Journal of Medicine offer new evidence that this Covid-19, which has killed more than 2,000 people, mostly in China, is not like its closely related coronavirus cousins.

During the early stages, the number of cases doubled approximately every seven and a half days. In early and mid-January 2020, the virus spread to other Chinese provinces, helped by the Chinese new year migration. On 20 January, China reported a sharp rise in cases with nearly 140 new patients, including two people in Beijing and one in Shenzhen.By 25 January, the number of laboratory-confirmed cases stood at 2,062, including 2,016 in Mainland China, seven in Thailand, six in Hong Kong, five in Macau, five in Australia, four in Malaysia, four in Singapore, three in France, three in Japan, three in South Korea, three in Taiwan, three in the United States, two in Vietnam, one in Nepal and one in Sweden.[76]The earliest reported symptoms occurred 1 December 2019, in a person who did not have any exposure to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market or to the remaining 40 affected people. Of the following 40 confirmed cases of COVID-19, two-thirds were found to have a link with the market, which also sold live animals.Of cases that began before 1 January 2020, 55% were linked to the market. By 22 January, this figure was reported to have dropped to 8.6%.[73] Hence, as the number of cases has increased, the significance of the market has lessened
