The Straits Times says

Stark choices in the 2020 US contest

Eight months before the presidential election in the United States, the Democrats are a house sharply divided, having now to choose between a centrist and an avowed socialist. After staging a remarkable comeback this week, former vice-president Joe Biden has pulled slightly ahead of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Mr Biden had a dream run on Super Tuesday, winning 10 of the 14 states which held primary elections to determine the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. Mr Sanders won the rest, including the prize catch of California with the largest chunk of delegates to pledge. The two septuagenarians are in a tight race, with Mr Biden tagged as the favourite. Mr Sanders retains a viable path ahead, with more than half the delegates yet to be won before the party meets in July to crown its candidate.

Up ahead are states with sizeable populations of Hispanics, a demographic thought to favour Mr Sanders. Centrist Biden’s strength is his electability, his presumed ability to carry the white working class, college graduates, suburban dwellers as well as African-Americans. He seems to also have found a footing in the Midwest, where crucial swing states lie. The folksy, albeit gaffe-prone Mr Biden likes to tout himself as the average Joe. What distinguishes him is his voice as a moderate, a rare commodity in America’s highly partisan atmosphere today. For those disquieted by President Donald Trump’s controversial homeland and foreign policies, Mr Biden promises a return to “normalcy”. But his candidacy is not without baggage. Republicans are already gearing up to attack him over his son’s business dealings in Ukraine and China where he is accused of having profited from his father’s position in the Obama administration.

Mahathir, Muhyiddin and Malay dominance are three factors key to Malaysia’s future. The question is how to resolve the inevitable tensions in seeking a new political balance.

The past two weeks in Malaysia have been mind-boggling. What began as an attempt by some members of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) governing coalition to seek clarity on leadership succession descended into a maelstrom of intrigue and subterfuge, culminating in the appointment of an underdog as Malaysia’s eighth prime minister or PM8.
