EDITORIAL- They really go to work for us

The country’s health workers—the doctors, nurses, medical technologists and others in the field—have been working hard during these extraordinary times. Every day, they expose themselves to risk.

Some have contracted COVID-19 and are valiantly fighting it. Some, tragically, have passed on. Their colleagues, albeit fearful, carry on the heroic work. We thank them profusely.

At the frontlines

Spare a thought for the fallen. They fought the good fight, but ultimately lost to this modern-day plague now just beginning to ravage this unhappy archipelago. On TV, Dr. Rustico Jimenez, president of the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines, Inc., lamented the snail’s pace in the distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) to the staffs of various medical institutions. Why, he demanded to know, is there such a “bureaucracy” in the distribution system? He warned of hospital personnel dying in the absence of PPEs. If you choose which hospital you will give the PPEs to, he said, logically, “there will be a problem.” And so we have.

EDITORIAL – Fake news in a crisis

In this health crisis, even a hint of further curtailment of people’s mobility or shutdown of retail stores could trigger panic buying and more crowding at outlets of food and other basic necessities.

Even if government agencies are closed or operating only at minimum capability, authorities can start gathering evidence against purveyors of fake news. In going after suspected offenders, however, authorities must draw the line between those who are maliciously and willfully working to mislead the public, and those who are inadvertently spreading inaccurate information out of concern over the uncertainty of the times. People are scared and don’t need to have their woes aggravated by being tagged as lawbreakers.

Economic Affairs: Waiting for global cooperation

Without it, the pandemic can’t be controlled

During the depths of the global financial crisis in April 2009, the Group of 20 (G-20) held a crucial summit in London, chaired by then British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. In the run-up to the summit, financial markets were crashing, economies were sliding into recession and confidence was shot to pieces.
