JAKARTA- Infections in Indonesia surge past 1,000, fatalities climb to nearly 90

A worker sprays disinfectant on a street in Jakarta on March 27, 2020. Indonesia reported 153 new cases on March 27, the highest single-day jump.

JAKARTA – The number of coronavirus cases in Indonesia has passed the 1,000 mark as the United States and Britain urged their citizens in the country to return home.

The world’s fourth-most populous nation reported 153 new cases on Friday (March 27), the highest single-day jump, bringing the total number of infections to 1,046.

Another nine people have died from Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, bringing the total number of fatalities in Indonesia to 87, the highest in South-east Asia.

At a regular briefing on Friday, the official spokesman on the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr Achmad Yurianto, said officials were actively tracing new confirmed cases with rapid testing kits to try and curb the virus’ spread.

“We have distributed nearly 500,000 rapid testing kits to all provinces. We’re trying to use this (method) for tracing,” he said.

The government has appealed to Indonesians to adopt social distancing measures and advised citizens to work, study as well as worship at home.

But experts say the measures may not be enough to stop the virus from spreading among the nearly 270 million people in the vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands.

.

Update: Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Myanmar shot up to eight on Saturday, within six days after the government announced the first two cases, seven of which are imported.

The Health Ministry identified the three new patients as a 29-year-old Myanmar man, who returned from the UK, a 58-year-old female foreigner from Switzerland who works for the United Nations and a 60-year-old Myanmar woman tour guide.

The United Nations said in a statement that its staff  “had been in self-quarantine” since her return on March 17.

The global intergovernmental organisation added that when its staff began to experience symptoms consistent with COVID-19, she was taken and isolated in a designated public hospital, where she underwent the test.

“The United Nations expresses its deepest appreciation to the Government of Myanmar for its support and to the hospital staff for the warm and professional care they are extending towards our colleague, who we hope will soon be on the path to full recovery,” the statement said.

“The United Nations is fully committed to supporting national efforts to prevent the spread of the virus in Myanmar and to strengthening the national capacity to manage cases as they occur, as well as the broader impact of COVID19,” it added.

On the other hand, the 29-year old Myanmar citizen returned to Yangon on March 26 and quarantined upon arrival under government COVID-19 protocol. He is now being isolated at Wai Bar Gyi Hospital in Yangon.

The 60-year-old female patient had not been out of the country recently but worked as a tour guide in Yangon. She is said to have been with tourists from France and was admitted to Yangon Hospital on March 25, after she coughed and vomited.

Medical staff immediately placed her in isolation, as a person under investigation for the COVID-19 disease.

So far, all the eight COVID-19 patients found in the country are in good health, according to the advisory of the Health Ministry.

The Health ministry tested 59 other persons suspected to be suffering from the disease, but all the results were negative, according to the National Health Laboratory.

Earlier in the week, two citizens who arrived from the United Kingdom and two from the US, one 69-year-old citizen who lives in Mingalar Taung Nyunt township who went to Australia a month ago to seek treatment for nasal cancer were found positive for COVID-19, which has killed over 26,450 people in 176 countries.

Myanmar has suspended all large public gatherings – including the Thingyan festival in April, the country’s biggest annual holiday – in a bid to prevent an outbreak of the disease here.

The Ministry of Health and Sports urged people to check its website or Facebook page for regular updates and the latest information on COVID-19 in the country.

The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11. The pnemonia-like disease infected over 576,859 people, according to the John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre. More than 128,300 have recovered from the disease/ KANG WAN CHERNZEYAR HEINAUNG PHAY KYI SOEKYAW SOE HTET 28 MAR 2020

SINGAPORE – A new cluster involving three people working at the packet-processing facility at SingPost Centre in Eunos was identified on Friday, as the Ministry of Health (MOH) announced 49 new confirmed Covid-19 cases in Singapore.

According to Singapore Post, the cases comprise one contract staff member and two full-time employees working on the same floor.

“The two full-time SingPost employees are not postmen and do not have contact with members of the public in their line of work,” it said.

SingPost added that it is suspending all packet-processing operations at SingPost Centre on March 26 and 27 for thorough cleaning and to facilitate contact tracing, and all employees working on the same floor have been instructed to stay home until further notice.

“As a result, members of the public should note that delivery of packages may be slightly delayed as cleaning and disinfection are underway,” it said, adding that it expects operations to resume on Monday (March 30). The delivery of letters is not affected.

SingPost also stressed that there is no known risk of contracting the virus through physical items so far.

The contract staff member is a 47-year-old man who was last at the processing facility on March 19 and was confirmed to have the coronavirus on March 24. The two full-time staff tested positive on March 27.

MOH also announced on Friday five more cases linked to the cluster at the PCF Sparkletots pre-school in Fengshan. This means there are now 25 cases linked to the Fengshan pre-school, 16 of whom are staff there and nine who are related to the principal.

The new cases include a six-year-old child who is family member of the principal. A spokesman for the Early Childhood Development Agency said the six-year-old is enrolled at PPIS Child Development Centre – Bedok Reservoir. The child was last at the centre on March 11 and was well then.

There were also three new cases linked to the cluster at Dover Court International School, bringing the number of people linked to the school to seven.

Another nine local cases are currently not linked to previous cases or to travel.

All in, 27 of the 49 new cases announced are local cases, with the remaining 22 imported. All but two of the imported cases are returning residents or long-term pass holders. The new cases bring the total number in Singapore to 732.

A total of 183 have recovered, with another 11 being discharged on Friday. Of the 432 still in hospital, most are stable or improving, while 17 are in critical care.

BANGKOK, Thailand-   Mass exodus may cause Covid-19 numbers to soar

A medical expert has predicted that Thailand could have 2,000 new Covid-19 cases in the next couple of weeks as a result of people fleeing Bangkok for their home provinces in the wake of the partial lockdown and invocation of the Emergency Decree.

Dr Prasit Watanapa, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, said on Friday said that new infections may surge in the next two weeks due to the exodus. He said that despite wearing face masks, they are still at the risk of spreading the virus and getting infected as they flock to bus terminals and are packed together on buses for several hours, Dr Prasit said.

“By that time, Thailand may not have enough medical personnel. Currently, the ratio in Bangkok is one doctor to 800 patients. But in other provinces, especially the Northeast, one doctor will be taking care of up to 3,000 patients, not to mention the lack of medical supplies. Subsequently, death rates along with the number of patients could rise significantly,” Dr Prasit said.

Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry has proposed tougher measures to control the spread of Covid-19 in Bangkok and provinces where infection rates are high, including the three southernmost provinces.

The proposal was raised by Chatchai Promlert, permanent secretary for Interior, at a meeting of the Covid-19 Administration Centre chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, the centre’s spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said.

Separately, the Public Health Ministry on Friday reported one more death from Covid-19, bringing the fatalities to five, while 91 new cases were found in 52 provinces, raising the total to 1,136. This is the first time that the number of new cases has dipped below 100 since March 22, which saw the highest number of new infections at 188, followed by 122, 106, 107, and 111 respectively in the following days.

Of the total 1,136 patients, 1,034 were hospitalised, including 11 in critical condition and 97 who have recovered and been discharged, said Dr Anupong Suchariyakul, a specialist at the Disease Control Department.

The latest death was that of a 50-year-old Thai man from Narathiwat’s Sungai Kolok district. He was hospitalised on March 11 after attending a religious ceremony in Malaysia.

Five more doctors and nurses in Bangkok’s Taksin Hospital are believed to be at risk of contracting Covid-19 from patients as concerns mount over the 11 medical personnel infected so far.

Two doctors, one nurse and two nursing assistants were categorised as having a “high risk” of falling ill as a result of treating a patient, a senior city official, who requested anonymity told the Bangkok Post on Friday.

The patient was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday and initially stayed in a common room for two hours before being relocated to a separate room after testing positive.

The official said the time the patient spent in the common room might have led to the transmission of the virus. “Despite medical staff wearing protective gear and working in safe environments, it is still safer to place any at-risk person under a 14-day quarantine.”

Taksin is one of the five City Hall-led hospitals designated to treat Covid-19 patients.

Both of them were transferred to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases 2 in Đông Anh District, Hà Nội.

Patient numbers 168 and 169 are both 49-year-old women working at Bạch Mai Hospital providing water for patients.

In total 5,000 members of staff at the hospital, and their family members and close friends, have been tested for COVID-19 after two other nurses previously tested positive.

They were the first members of the hospital to test positive for the virus last week. For now, eight patients have been identified to be related with Bạch Mai hospitals, including three recorded Friday.

A total of 134 staff at the Bạch Mai Tropical Diseases Center were related to patient 86 and patient 87 and the Department of Cardiology C4, all results were negative.

The Ministry of Health has identified there is a possibility of transmission among patients’ family members who came to care for patients, the source of infection from outside into hospitals.

Currently, Bạch Mai Hospital is taking all measures to control, suspend receiving patients and isolate the entire hospital to ensure safety for patients, patients’ relatives and hospital staff.

The Ministry of Health recommends that all patients and their family members who have come to the hospital for examination and treatment within the past 14 days perform self-isolation and contact the nearest health agency for health monitoring. — VNS
