YANGON- Myanmar medical worker is latest COVID-19 victim

This story has been updated at 10:19pm on March 31.

A medical worker in Yangon became the latest victim of the deadly COVID-19 disease that claimed the life of one patient in the country on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old woman, the 15th case since the virus was first detected in the country nine days ago, lives in Bahan township in Yangon. She has not been out of the country recently.

Shortly after the International SOS (ISOS) Clinic Yangon issued a statement saying that “a new confirmed case of COVID-19 is related to the [clinic].”

“The person who is working at the clinic is now under observation at the War Bar Gi Public Hospital.”

ISOS will also be closed for an undetermined period, it said.

The woman developed a fever, cough and sore throat on Friday, and reported to the township Public Health Department on Monday. She was transferred to Yangon West General Hospital and immediately placed under observation.

Earlier Tuesday, the Health Ministry reported the country’s first death from the virus, a 69-year-old man who recently went to Australia to seek cancer treatment and stopped in Singapore for a few days on the way back.

The patient died of acute respiratory distress syndrome with septic shock and severe community-acquired pneumonia as a result of the COVID-19 virus.

The National Health Laboratory said 66 other people had tested negative for the virus.

The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11. The pneumonia-like disease has killed over 39,000 people and afflicted over 803,000 in 179 countries and territories. More than 172,000 people have recovered from the disease.

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said in a nationally televised address on Tuesday that the government would impose a community quarantine if necessary./  AUNG PHAY KYI SOE
