China under mounting pressure over virus origins

China on Thursday came under mounting pressure over the coronavirus pandemic from Western powers led by the United States, which said it was probing whether the virus that has infected more than 2.1 million people actually originated in a Wuhan laboratory. The new focus on China’s role came as the world wrestles with a crisis that has killed more than 140,000 people and created historic jobless numbers, with Britain, Japan and New York extending lockdown measures. President Donald Trump, who initially downplayed the illness whose US death toll has shot past 30,000, has been attacking China for weeks and appeared to gain support after a videoconference among leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized democracies.

    Lexus Releases New Gen LC500

The Lexus LC has been around since 2018. Revealed at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, this gorgeous grand tourer is now on its 2021 model year, marking an evolution in the luxury motoring qualities of Lexus’ flagship coupe. One of the main changes implemented for the newest generation of the LC 500 coupe is weight savings. Overall, the car’s weight has been reduced by almost 10 kg, accomplished mainly with changes to the suspension, including the use of aluminum lower arms, and lighter, hollow anti-roll bars. The 21-inch forged alloy wheels also have a lighter construction than previous models.Other than weight savings, another focus was on updating the suspension for a smoother, softer ride to give the driver a stronger feel of the road. According to Lexus’ press release, “the electronic front shock absorber controls were adjusted to give a longer stroke, and bound stopper rigidity was optimised to help create a smoother suspension stroke overall. Rear anti-roll bar rigidity was increased to improve front turn-in performance and provide more linear steering input, again helping make the driver feel more connected to the road.”“For better vehicle control in mid to high-speed ranges, the LC’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) has gained a new Active Cornering Assist (ACA) function. This helps control cornering by providing braking to the inner wheels in line with lateral vehicle acceleration experienced when higher G-forces are generated in spirited driving.”The LC coupe’s overall design has also been updated. Some of the changes include the spindle grille that extends across the front of the car, a large glass panel, and blacked-out rear pillars create the effect of a floating roof, while chrome moldings “echo the curving lines of the traditional Japanese katana sword.”The rear light clusters have also been revamped, their night-time illumination signature inspired by “the afterburners of a jet”. At the front fascia, the ultra-compact triple-LED units give the coupe a rather menacing look, and they are half the size of conventional headlights. The newest generation Lexus LC comes in 10 different body color options, including Blazing Carnelian, new for the 2021 model year, and Terrane Khaki, which was previously reserved for the LC Limited Edition.Other shades include F White, Dark Grey, Sonic Silver, Sonic Titanium, Solid Black, Radiant Red, Flare Yellow and Deep Blue. The LC 500 is equipped with a V8 engine that makes around 355 horsepower, and can move the car from a complete standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in less than 4.7 seconds. The 5.0 liter V8 engine comes mated with a 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission. The LC’s multimedia features are mainly controlled via a 10.3-inch high-resolution screen with a split-screen capability that allows different functions, including audio and climate controls, to be viewed and operated simultaneously. This infotainment system also comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All LC 500 and 500h models are equipped with Lexus Safety System+ as standard. This includes Pre-Collision System with pedestrian detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition and Automatic High Beam. Further safeguards against common collision risks include a Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Although the Lexus LC 500 will be available to order starting June, pricing hs not been revealed yet.  Also Read:  Lexus LC 500, RX, Takes Center Stage at the 2020 Chicago Auto Show

    Bugatti Releases a Watch with a W-16

Bugatti is known for many things, some of which are opulence, luxury, and exclusivity.Of course, it goes without saying that Bugatti cars are notoriously expensive, some of which are now priced at millions of dollars. So when Bugatti partners up with luxury jewelry and wristwatch retailer Jacob & Co., you know it’s going to run into some money. Jacob & Co. partnered up with Bugatti around a year ago, and the partnership has already spawned two products, both of which are Bugatti timepieces. The first one is the Twin Turbo Furious Bugatti, which only had 18 samples. The second one, Epic X Chrono Carbon Bugatti, was more widely available with 110 samples.Officially named the Bugatti Chiron 16 Cylinder Tourbillon, what makes the third Jacob & Co. X Bugatti product special is that it has a miniature W-16 engine taken from the Chiron itself—and it actually works (check this Instagram page). The actual W-16 engine powering the legendary Bugatti Chiron propels the car with the power of 1,500 horses. In comparison, the famous LaFerrari only has 970 hp, while the best selling supercar, the McLaren 720S has 710 hp. The Chiron comes with a hefty price tag, starting at about $3 million (Php 152 million). As the main focal point of the piece, designers from Jacob & Co. managed to recreate 16 fully working pistons for the watch where the pistons will move a solid steel crankshaft, just like a working engine. The company says that the moving crankshaft placed inside the watch is one of the “smallest and most complicated watch parts ever manufactured.”It goes without saying that a watch with an engine modeled after the Chiron would be costly as well. This beautiful, insane watch will start upwards of $280,000 or Php 14.2 million.  Also Read:  A Closer Look at the Holy Trinity of Bugatti

IEA predicts ‘worst year in the history’ of oil sector

The coronavirus outbreak will slash global oil demand in 2020 to erase a decade of growth and set up “the worst year in the history” of the sector, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said Wednesday. Demand is projected to plummet by a record 9.3 million barrels per day (mbd) for the year as a whole, with 29 mbd in the month of April, and 26 mbd in May — “staggering numbers”, according to the agency’s executive director Fatih Birol. “I believe in a few years’ time, when you look at 2020 we may well see that it was the worst year in the history of global oil markets,” he told reporters on a teleconference.

On-off social distancing may be needed until 2022: Harvard study

A one-time lockdown won’t halt the novel coronavirus and repeated periods of social distancing may be required into 2022 to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed, Harvard scientists who modeled the pandemic’s trajectory said Tuesday. The Harvard team’s computer simulation, which was published in a paper in the journal Science, assumed that COVID-19 will become seasonal, like closely related coronaviruses that cause the common cold, with higher transmission rates in colder months. “We found that one-time social distancing measures are likely to be insufficient to maintain the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 within the limits of critical care capacity in the United States,” lead author Stephen Kissler said in a call with reporters.

The SUV, which sold almost 1,500,000 vehicles around the world in 2019, has also been named the second most satisfying vehicle according to the survey.“We’re absolutely delighted the 3008 SUV has been named the Driver Power ‘Best Mid-Size SUV’ for the third year running,” said David Peel, Peugeot UK Managing Director.”Customer satisfaction is our highest priority, so to see our 3008 SUV ranked number 1 in its category, and second overall, by owners, is something we’re incredibly proud of. ”It is not a wonder why Peugeot 3008 bag its third win in the survey, thanks to its attractive appearance, stylish, flowing lines, functional features, huge space, and reliability on the road. “Several years after going on sale, the PEUGEOT 3008 SUV is still wooing owners with its looks. That great styling is backed up by solid build quality and strong reliability, with an impressively low proportion of owners telling of issues,” said Steve Fowler, Editor in Chief of Auto Express. It’s no surprise that owners rated it Britain’s Best Mid-Size SUV, and the second most-satisfying car to own overall.”The 3008 has enjoyed a huge popularity among Peugeot’s customers. Launched in 2016, it has received 22 UK awards, and more than 65 international awards, including the prestigious European Car of the Year Award 2017. Other awards include AutoTrader’s New Car of the Year 2019 and of course, the ‘Gold Car of the Year’ and the ‘Gold Winner – Mid-Size SUV’ awards in the 16th Driver Power survey.Driver Power, which is conducted by UK most popular automotive magazine, Auto Express, is the country’s number one car customer satisfaction survey today. Global stocks mostly rise as oil prices suffer another blow

Global stocks mostly rose Tuesday as markets embraced better coronavirus case counts in some hotspots, while oil prices slumped amid skepticism over an historic agreement by petroleum producers. Major US indices gained more than two percent, the latest positive day for stocks since officials in New York and some other hotspots pointed to progress in cutting the number of new coronavirus cases. “Markets continue to react in an odd way, mostly ignoring all the bad figures that have come their way and focusing on the positives, such as the China figures,” said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG trading group.

Pandemic causing deep recession, and it could get worse: IMF

The coronavirus pandemic is pushing the global economy into its deepest recession in a century, cutting world output by three percent this year, and the crisis could get worse, the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday. The downturn will slash $9 trillion from the world economy, IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath told reporters as she presented the latest forecasts in the World Economic Outlook. With much of the global economy shut down amid efforts to contain the virus and keep health systems from collapsing, the IMF warned that there are “severe risks of a worse outcome” due to the “extreme uncertainty around the strength of the recovery.”
