COVID-19 “The 2019 Plague” Day 153: VIENTIANE, Laos- Coronavirus-free period extends to 15 days

Laos has recorded no new COVID-19 cases for 15 consecutive days, and seven of the 19 people infected by the coronavirus have been discharged from hospitals in Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control under the Ministry of Health, Dr Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh told a press conference on Monday that there had been no further outbreak of infections because society was following the directives in Prime Minister’s Order No. 6.

However, he warned officials and the public against complacency saying the government was maintaining its rigorous monitoring, especially at the borders. It also continues to advise everyone to strictly comply with the measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as laid down in the PM’s order.
“We are continuing to scrutinise anyone who has arrived via border checkpoints to ensure the nation does not have a second phase of infections,” Dr Rattanaxay said.
He also requested the public to remain vigilant against the disease with the onset of the rainy season.

On April 26, the National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced it had been monitoring 899 people at 193 accommodation centres around the country along with 599 people self-isolating at home. It had tested 492 people with no positive COVID-19 cases recorded.
Truck drivers bringing freight into Laos from Thailand continue to be checked for the coronavirus as well those entering from Vietnam and China.

Eleven local coronavirus patients are currently being treated at the Friendship Hospital in Vientiane and one in the Luang Prabang Hospital. All of them have only mild symptoms.
As of April 27, COVID-19 had spread to 210 countries and territories, with 2,992,159 confirmed cases globally (72,755 new infections). The virus has claimed 206,873 lives while more than 877,136 people have recovered.  By Sangkhomsay Bubphanouvong
