Jakarta. Indonesia reported 949 new confirmed cases of coronavirus on Saturday, the second highest rise in a day, to take the total number of cases to 21,745 as East Java is becoming a new epicenter of the outbreak.

East Java again became the biggest single-day contributor with 466 new cases to bring the province’s total to 3,129. It is also the third consecutive day East Java reported the most daily cases among other provinces.

Over the last three days alone, East Java has seen 1,099 new cases or 35 percent of its overall figure.

East Java’s capital of Surabaya has a later start for the implementation of the so-called large-scale social restriction compared to Jakarta and West Java.

In late April, the province detected a new cluster of infection at a cigarette factory near Surabaya. Two factory workers had died from Covid-19, prompted the city to place more than 500 others under isolation. The factory has since been shut temporarily.

Jakarta remains the hardest hit by the outbreak with 115 more cases on Saturday, taking the total number of infection in the capital city to 6,515.

National Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Achmad Yurianto said 25 patients had died from coronavirus-related diseases in the 24-hour period, taking the total death toll to 1,351 nationwide.

The government doesn’t include deaths from probable cases to the Covid-19 mortality.

“There are 192 patients who have recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 5,249,” Achmad said.

Mass testing remains an issue as just above 176,000 people have undergone polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based testing since the outbreak began in early March.

Meanwhile, probable cases at hospitals stand at 11,495 and close to 50,000 persons are still under surveillance for suspected Covid-19 infection, according to task force data.
