BEIJING – China and the United States are entangled in a trade dispute, a tech battle and an increasingly antagonistic ideological conflict that political pundits have labelled the new Cold War. Now, the chatter has turned to the prospect of a hot war between the two giants.

There has been persistent talk within Chinese political circles in recent months about the possibility of Beijing getting dragged into an armed conflict with Washington. Then, earlier this month (Aug 3), former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd – who has spent much of his time after his political career studying China – openly raised the prospect in an op-ed in Foreign Affairs magazine.
