COVID-19 PANDEMIC: Indonesia Adds 3,800 Covid-19 Cases as Sumatra Provinces See Resurgence

Jakarta. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Indonesia reached the second-highest rise on Saturday with more provinces on Sumatra Island reporting a three-digit daily total and new transmissions in Jakarta spiraling beyond control.

Indonesia has recorded 3,806 new cases of the virus in the last 24 hours to take the country’s total to 214,746. The highest one-day rise was 3,861 cases only two days ago.

It also reported 106 more deaths from the disease, bringing the total death toll to 8,650 or 4 percent of total cases.

The daily total in Jakarta returned to the four-digit territory, with 1,205 cases for a total of 52,840. Its death toll grew by 18 to 1,386.

The capital has added more than 12,700 new cases month to date, almost three times the number of cases accumulated by East Java, the second worst-affected province.

East Java again reported the highest daily death toll, with 29 more Covid-19 deaths for a total of 2,746.

The number of confirmed cases in the province totaled 37,839, an increase by 384 from a day earlier. The daily total in East Java has been rising by 300 or more since August 23.

Escalation in Central Java is also alarming — its daily rise has outpaced that of East Java in the last two days. It added 386 more cases for a total of 17,460.

West Java was ranked fourth with a total of 14,231 cases, 291 more from the previous day.

More Hotspots in Sumatra
While the big four on Java Island continued to report big numbers in caseloads, more provinces in Sumatra saw resurgence that has earlier hit North Sumatra and Riau.

Daily rises in Aceh and West Sumatra reached three digits on Saturday, as Riau saw a new high and South Sumatra became the 10th province to have accumulated more than 5,000 cases since the outbreak.

Riau registered 224 cases of the virus, its highest rise ever during the outbreak, to take its total to 3,569. It has seen three-digit daily rise in 11 consecutive days. Nearly half of its total cases have come during this month.

North Sumatra reported 121 new cases to take the province’s total to 8,362 and is now on course for overtaking South Kalimantan (9,249), which was hit badly by the virus at the initial stage but its newly cases are now slowing.

North Sumatra and Riau have earlier emerged as new hotspots and improved testing capacity in West Sumatra may add speed to growing caseloads from the island.

Elsewhere, the resort island of Bali reported 135 more cases, bringing its total number of confirmed cases to 7,113. Bali has been averaging 159 cases since the beginning of the month, the highest daily average outside Java. Riau, with more than 1,700 cases since Sept. 1, came second when the top four are excluded.

The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients accounted for 71 percent of total cases. Southeast Asia’s biggest country is now dealing with more than 53,600 active cases in 34 provinces.
