“The 2019 Plague” Day 300

Jakarta. Indonesia has among the highest number of active coronavirus cases in the region, totaling 60,054 on Thursday or 22.9 percent of total cases, as the daily rise again set a new high.

Southeast Asia’s biggest country has recorded 4,643 cases in the last 24 hours — the highest single-day rise after the previous record of 4,465 only a day earlier — to take its total to 262,022. Indonesia has beaten its own record seven times this month.

The daily death toll rose by 128 for a total of 10,105, extending a run of three-digit daily deaths for 11 consecutive days now.

The country has been averaging more than 3,600 cases since the beginning of the month in comparison to 2,100 cases in August due to a surge in cases in provinces across Java and Sumatra, the country’s two most populous islands.

Jakarta reported 1,044 new cases to take its total to 66,731, including 1,648 deaths. More often than not, the daily number in the capital city has reached four digits throughout the month.

East Java came next with 42,098 cases, 343 more from yesterday. It returned as the province with the highest daily death toll, with 27 Covid-19 deaths for a total of 3,062.

Central Java reported the highest daily rise in almost two weeks with 434 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 20,673. The province has the third-highest death toll, totaling 1,359 deaths as of Thursday.

But it’s West Java that is experiencing the biggest surge among the giant provinces and catching up Central Java in the top three. West Java added 804 cases, its highest daily rise since July 22, for a total of 19,397.

West Java has added around 1,600 more cases than Central Java and recorded a daily average close to that of second worst-hit East Java month-to-date.

South Sulawesi, the only province outside Java in the big five, also saw an upward trend in newly cases albeit at a much slower pace. It averages 115 cases this month and has recorded a total of 14,813 cases.

South Kalimantan becomes the sixth province to report more than 10,000 cases overall, but it remains the only province in the top ten that has a daily average below three digits.

West Sumatra and Papua saw a new high in their daily numbers, 302 and 266 cases, respectively. Both have recorded more than 5,000 cases since the outbreak.

West Sumatra is among several other provinces on Sumatra Island that have been experiencing a drastic spike in newly cases since the start of the month.

For instance, 70 percent of Riau’s 6,120 overall cases have occurred in September. Aceh has recorded around 2,200 new cases while North Sumatra accumulated around 2,900 cases since Sept. 1.

North Sumatra (9,749 cases) is within days to pass the 10,000 mark if the current trend continues.

Other hotspots like Bali and East Kalimantan have added more than 3,000 cases each this month, bringing their total to 8,245 and 7,459, respectively.
