COVID-19 PANDEMIC: Indonesia Daily Covid Number Sets Record for Third Consecutive Day

Jakarta. Indonesia reported a new high in daily confirmed cases of coronavirus on Friday, with 4,823 new cases to take its total to 266,845, including 10,218 deaths.

This is for the third consecutive day that the country has beaten its own record and the eighth time since the beginning of the month, as daily numbers are surging at an unprecedented rate.

Daily death toll rose by 113 to extend the run of three-digit daily deaths for 12 days in a row in a country that has not even seen a peak in the first wave of transmissions.

The surge is mainly attributable to a four-digit rise in Jakarta and an uptick in the most populous province of West Java, East Kalimantan and several other provinces on Sumatra Island.

Indonesia has added more than 92,000 cases month-to-date in comparison to the 66,420 cases it recorded during the whole month of August.

Jakarta, the hardest hit by the virus, has recorded 1,171 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing its total number of confirmed cases to 67,902, more than any other provinces.

Daily death toll has been reaching two digits in the capital in the past week, including 13 more deaths on Friday to take the total death toll to 1,661.

Another biggest concern is the surge in West Java, which started to outpace that of second worst-hit East Java on Friday.

While being ranked fourth among worst-affected provinces, West Java now averages 363 cases, in comparison to 354 in East Java. The latest seven-day average in West Java stands at 601.

It has added more than 9,000 cases since Sept. 1, second only to Jakarta, to take its total to 20,131.

East Java reported 279 cases, the lowest daily total in 12 days, for a total of 42,391. But it again registered the highest death toll of the day, with 22 Covid-19 deaths for a total of 3,084. No other provinces have even recorded 2,000 deaths.

Central Java is also experiencing a surge with daily average near double the August figure. It added 331 new cases for a total of 21,004. West Java is catching up quickly, from a difference of around 3,000 cases on Sept. 1 to less than 1,000 on Friday.

Outside the densely populated island of Java, Riau has come out with the biggest daily caseloads by adding 4,470 cases month-to-date, as more and more provinces on Sumatra begin reporting three-digits daily numbers.

The latest to do so is Riau Islands province, which reported 147 new cases for a total of 2,022. West Sumatra, North Sumatra, South Sumatra and Riau have now accumulated more than 5,000 cases each.

Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra, has added 2,300 cases throughout September alone, equivalent to 59 percent of the total cases it has recorded since the outbreak.

East Kalimantan is also experiencing the toughest period in the outbreak this month, adding around 3,600 new cases for a total of 7,851.

It reported 392 new cases on Friday, the province’s highest single-day rise since the outbreak.

Daily numbers also return to three digits in Bali, which now has a total of 8,389 cases.

Indonesia has 60,431 active cases across the archipelago, representing 22.6 percent of total cases.
