Cardinal Tagle Is the Forerunner to Succeed Pope Francis but One Thing Stands in His Way
.
The death of Pope Francis on Monday at the age of 88 has ushered in a time of both mourning and a pivotal transition for the Roman Catholic Church.
The Argentine pontiff was known for his tireless efforts to reform the Church he led for over 12 years, promoting inclusivity and advocating for the marginalized.
With his passing, all eyes now turn to who will succeed him — a choice that could deeply shape the future of the Church and its 1.4 billion faithful worldwide.
One name that has garnered attention, especially in Asia, is that of Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle of the Philippines.
Three Filipino cardinals to join Papal Conclave
The Filipino cardinal-electors are Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Cardinal Jose Advincula, and Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David. All three were appointed to the Sacred College of Cardinals by Pope Francis.

In an article on Wednesday, BBC News listed Tagle, 67, as one of the four frontrunners for the papacy, alongside Cardinals Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, Pietro Parolin and Fridolin Ambongon Besungu.
Known for his humility, pastoral sensitivity and global perspective, Tagle was often compared to Pope Francis, with whom he shared a similar tone and vision for the future of the Church.

Cardinal Tagle Is the Forerunner to Succeed Pope Francis but One Thing Stands in His Way

SHOCKING TRUTH: WHY CARDINAL TAGLE COULD BE THE NEXT POPE?
A former Archbishop of Manila, Tagle now serves as the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization at the Vatican, putting him at the center of the Church’s global mission to spread and deepen the faith around the world.
His election would be historic, marking him as the first pope from Asia and the first Filipino to ascend to the papacy.

.
In the predominantly Catholic Philippines, home to the third-largest Catholic population in the world, the possibility of Tagle’s papal election is being watched with immense anticipation and pride.
While Tagle is aligned with Pope Francis’ progressive reforms, his appeal also lies in his ability to bridge divides — whether between progressives and conservatives or between the Church’s traditional centers in Europe and its rapidly growing communities in Asia and Africa.
Still, the outcome remains far from certain. While Pope Francis had a hand in shaping the cardinal electorate, his appointees aren’t all on the same page. They come from different backgrounds and have a variety of theological views.
The process to choose the new pope is now in motion with the College of Cardinals getting ready to enter the conclave, the historic and highly secretive voting process in the Sistine Chapel.

There, under the frescoed ceiling of Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, the cardinals will deliberate and vote until a single name shall emerge with the required two-thirds majority.
This time, the conclave will present a particularly open and unpredictable outcome. With 80 percent of the cardinal-electors having been appointed by Pope Francis, this marks the first time many of them will participate in choosing a new pontiff.
The composition of this College of Cardinals is also significantly more international. Fewer than half of the electors are European, underscoring the Church’s demographic shift toward the Global South.
As the cardinals prepare to gather in Rome, the world will be watching closely. The next pope will shoulder an immense spiritual responsibility, while facing the daunting challenge of guiding the Catholic Church through pressing issues like declining clergy numbers, calls for greater transparency and reform, and navigating the Church’s role in a rapidly evolving world.
Whoever is chosen, the decision made in the Sistine Chapel in the coming days will reverberate far beyond the Vatican. It will profoundly impact the faith, lives, and aspirations of Catholics worldwide for years to come.

Pilgrims mourn Francis as he lies in state

.
A wave of quiet grief swept through Vatican City on Wednesday as Pope Francis lay in state in St. Peter’s Basilica. Thousands of mourners gathered to bid farewell to a pope many considered a father figure.
Francis passed away Monday after suffering a stroke. His coffin was carried from his residence to the basilica in a solemn procession, met with prayers, applause, and tears from faithful pilgrims and curious tourists alike.
“He was like family,” said one woman from Mexico. “He made the Church feel close again.”

His body rests beneath Michelangelo’s dome, before the Altar of the Confession, where he will lie in state until Saturday’s funeral which will be attended by world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prince William of the UK.
Italy has declared five days of national mourning as security tightens and tributes pour in for the beloved Argentine pontiff. After the funeral, he will be laid to rest in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of his most cherished churches.
