2020 TOKYO OLYMPIC-ASEAN MEDALS: Team PH is the best performing ASEAN country in the Tokyo Olympics
The Philippines extended its dominance over Southeast Asian neighbors by becoming the best performing ASEAN country in the Tokyo Olympics.
The 19-man PH team collected one gold, two silvers and one bronze medal in the two-week conclave to share 50th place with Slovakia in the overall medal standings.
The gold came from weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who also became the first Filipino Olympic champion, while the two silvers came from boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam. The lone bronze is courtesy of boxer Eumir Marcial.
Indonesia trailed at 55th place with one gold, one silver and three bronzes, followed by Thailand, which went home with one gold and one bronze for joint 59th.
Malaysia bagged one silver and one bronze for 74th.
Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei and Laos went home empty-handed.
The Filipinos entered the delayed Olympics in high spirits following the country’s overall championship feat at the 2019 SEA Games where they reaped 149 gold, 117 silver and 121 bronze medals.
Sports officials hope to continue these successful stints in the Hangzhou Asian Games in China and Vietnam SEA Games where Vietnam is host.
Meanwhile, United States won the most gold medals in the Olympiad with 39 golds. China was one gold medal short with 38, followed by host Japan with 27 and Great Britain with 22.
