HÀ NỘI — A total of 7,930 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Wednesday, taking the total number of infections to 992,735.

There were also 79 fatalities announced on Wednesday.

In the last 24 hours, the number of daily cases has decreased nationally by 221. Just 12 of the new infections were imported and quarantined upon arrival.

HCM City still tops the list with 1,414 new infections, followed by neighbouring Đồng Nai Province with 848, and Bình Dương Province with 627.

Myanmar’s ruling military on Wednesday stood by its decision to deny a Southeast Asian envoy access to detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, resisting growing international pressure to comply with a regional peace plan agreed in April. Vice-Senior General Soe Win, the second in command of the junta that seized power from Suu Kyi’s elected government in February, said allowing a foreigner access to someone charged with crimes was against domestic law. “I believe no country will allow anyone to do beyond the existing law like this,” he said in a speech published in state media.

Concerns are mounting after Covid-19 cases were detected among students when schools resumed on Monday.

Initially a false alarm was suspected when antigen tests kits returned positive results at Kham Soi Phitthayasan School in Mukdahan’s Nikhom Kham Soi district, but further RT-PCR tests all proved negative.

Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said that 14 teachers and three students initially tested positive using ATKs procured by the school on Thursday.
