Perhaps it’s time for local governments to prove the national policy makers wrong. Expanding some more the coverage of the solo parents law would be a good way to start.

If she is sanctioned or disbarred, Rowena Guanzon says she can just plant tubo or sugarcane. The presiding commissioner of the Commission on Elections’ First Division is unfazed by the possible consequences of her disclosure of her vote for the disqualification of former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. from the presidential race.
Guanzon made the disclosure as she expressed exasperation that the two other members of the first division, which is handling the consolidated disqualification cases against the dictator’s son, appeared to be taking their sweet time in releasing their ruling, which is being penned by Commissioner Aimee Ferolino-Ampoloquio. Guanzon said the division members had agreed to release the decision on Jan. 17; at the latest, she said it should have been out on Jan. 25. Ampoloquio, who pointed to a lawyer catching COVID for the delay, denied agreeing to a Jan. 17 release.

Marcos’ name has been included in the ballot that is set for printing. He himself should not want a cloud of doubt hanging over the legitimacy of his candidacy. The Comelec has been busy working to ensure that the upcoming elections will be honest, open and peaceful. The timely resolution of this case is critical in attaining this objective.
The Marcos case must be resolved with finality before election day on May 9. This cannot happen if the Comelec does not treat the case with the urgency that it deserves.

EDITORYAL – Mga pulis na magnanakaw
May mga pulis na namang sangkot sa pagnanakaw. Nakakahiya na ang nangyayaring ito. Lagi na lamang may mga pulis na sangkot sa pangangawat kahit malaki na ang kanilang suweldo. Hindi sila kuntento sa suweldo at gusto pang kumamal ng pera.
Walong pulis ng Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) ang inaresto ng kapwa nila pulis noong Miyerkules dahil sa pagnanakaw sa mga Chinese na nagtatrabaho sa Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) sa Angeles City, Pampanga. Pitong Chinese at isang Pinoy helper ang na-rescue. Nakatanggap ng report ang mga pulis na isang grupo ng kalalakihan na nagpakilalang CIDG ang sumalakay sa isang bahay na workstation ng Chinese POGO workers. Nagko-conduct umano ng drug bust at operation sa loose firearms ang grupo. Nakuha sa sasakyan ng CIDG agents ang P300,000 cash at dollar bills.

Noong 2016, itinaas ni President Duterte ang suweldo ng mga pulis. Ang suweldo ngayon ng patrolman ay P29,668; ang corporal ay P30,867 at ang staff sergeant ay P32,114. Maraming nag-akala na sa paglaki ng suweldo ng mga pulis, hindi na gagawa ang mga ito ng kawalanghiyaan gaya ng pagnanakaw. Pero kabaliktaran dahil lalo pang naging gahaman sa pera. Kailangang maisakatuparan ni General Carlos ang paglilinis sa PNP. Dapat maisalba ang organisasyon sa scalawags.
