Administering of 3rd booster dose against COVID-19 in Cambodia finally takes off along with 4th dose

Khmer Times / 1.21.22
After languishing at about three million booster doses administered from the start in August last year  until end of 2021, the onset of Omicron and the availability of Pfizer Vaccines, albeit in limited supply, seems to be the impetus the Ministry of Health needed to get people to rush back to vaccination centres.

The 3rd booster dose has now been administered to 5,073,265 people, including 2,587,619 females while the fourth dose which started on January 14 has seen a total of 204,730 getting it as of January 20.

To date, since vaccination first started on February 10, 2021, a total of 14,326,513 people have received their first dose of the vaccine while 13,728,089 have received their second dose to complete their two course vaccine programme.

Community, Imported cases jump as Cambodia records highest ever daily Omicron case total

Khmer Times
Cambodia recorded another big jump in Omicron cases today with the highest daily new cases total since November 13th 2021

Todays official daily new COVID case total (diagnosed by PCR test) was 57 – all the Omicron variant – bringing the COVID case total to 121,299 cases.

The Kingdom recorded 44 new community and 13 new imported cases of the new variant.

Cambodia has now recorded 858 cases of Omicron – 472 imported and 386 community cases.

Omicron, reported to be highly transmissible and with a higher reinfection rate,  has now spread worldwide – including Cambodia.

Health Ministry spokesman Hok Kim Cheng said that the Omicron variant is highly transmissible although the symptoms are mild while the Delta strain had caused thousands of people to die.

“The emergence of the Omicron variant does not mean that the Delta, a highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus strain, has disappeared,” he added.

At present, he said less than 150 people are admitted to Intensive Care Units across the country with Covid-19 while the majority suffered only mild symptoms and have recovered at home or are recovering at their houses without burdening the health system. All are victims of the Omicron variant.

A third wave of the coronavirus pandemic has begun to take hold across the country, with the Omicron variant of the virus believed to have driven a surge in cases and hospitalization in the capital, where more than 80 percent of the population has been vaccinated.

,

On Thursday, the country saw 8,077 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, the highest official daily caseload since August last year when the country was struggling to contain the Delta-induced second wave, which peaked at 56,757 cases a month earlier.

.

While studies have shown that Omicron is less virulent than its predecessors, experts have warned that the high transmissibility of the variant could lead to a spike in cases that could disastrously overwhelm the healthcare system.ess:
