OP-ED:  LTO needs to move its driving seminars online

2.18.22

Those that frequently drive from home to work or school know that the country’s roads are not exactly the safest places to drive on. This is proven by annual road accident statistics over the past couple of years. There’s no shortage of video proof either on social media.

The seminar can be chopped into shorter videos that an applicant has to click on and watch to the end manually. Another option is daily Zoom or Google Meets seminars. This way, and by requiring cameras to be on, the LTO can verify that applicants are indeed paying attention.

These are just some of the ways the requirement can be met without the risk of spreading the virus. All it takes is a little resourcefulness.

COMMENT:

The problem with the government agencies is they prefer to have income out of these seminars than help people get assistance for them to get decent jobs and livelihood especially those who are not educated enough to land into a higher level working statues .

EDITORIAL –Tough debates for tough bets

Remember that 2016 presidential debate when one candidate fiercely vowed to ride a jet ski to one of our islands being claimed by China, to plant the Philippine flag on it?

Years later, amid China’s escalating aggression on disputed territories, people demanded that the now-elected official redeem his election promise. To which he snorted: “’Yung bravado ko was just a pure campaign joke!” How “stupid” of listeners to believe it, he added during his weekly address in May 2021.

Correcting fake news — which takes traction much more quickly than fact-driven information — may be a slow painful process now being done by several organizations. A more direct and efficient correction is to confront candidates benefitting from the falsehoods in a televised debate or interview, where prevarication would be fatal. Was martial law really a “golden age”? As a former police officer, were you ever involved in the arrest and torture of martial law dissidents? Have you fully paid the millions in taxes you owe the government from your winnings in boxing matches? Is your recent putdown of rival candidates a way to insinuate yourself into a Duterte endorsement? Are you just out for revenge against a political family?

Hearing the facts straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, would certainly do wonders in upholding the truth, while giving voters the informed choice they need to vote wisely.

EDITORIAL- Fire season

The Philippine Star

EDITORIAL - Fire season

The bougainvilleas are bursting with flowers and mangoes are at their sweetest as the weather becomes warmer this month. The dry season also heralds more fires. In the first two months of the year alone, 2,103 fires have been recorded nationwide. The Bureau of Fire Protection said this was an increase of 12.88 percent from the 1,863 incidents recorded during the same period last year. Yesterday, the first day of Fire Prevention Month, the BFP reported at least three fires in different parts of the country.

Over the years, fire prevention awareness has improved along with firefighting capability, but so much more can be done to save lives and property from destruction by fire. These points will be highlighted again for more action this Fire Prevention Month.

COMMENT:

Fire Prevention commemo.. is nothing but signboards having no effect.. this is the season with more fires.
