EDITORIAL – Where’s the outrage?

On top of suspending e-sabong, authorities should expedite investigation into the case until the missing men are found and the perpetrators identified and held accountable. Only then can we maintain our faith in the justice system. Maybe then our sense of outrage could be restored. Because if we lose that, what else do we stand to lose next?

EDITORIAL – Back to traffic jams

The Philippine Star

EDITORIAL - Back to traffic jams

With the easing of the National Capital Region to Alert Level 1, a bane of the pre-pandemic normal is back: heavy traffic. The situation has become such that the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is now considering the full return of the number coding scheme, currently being implemented only during rush hour.

Ukraine, armed with weapons partly supplied by sympathetic states, has put up strong resistance to the invasion. The conflict, however, has displaced many of its people, and Russian bombardment has hit even Ukrainian civilians and killed children. The conflict has rattled global markets particularly crude oil trading; the Philippines itself is reeling from surging fuel prices. The global community must send a message in the strongest terms that this invasion will turn the perpetrator into an international pariah, with all its dire consequences. There has been no significant improvement in mass transport facilities, so people still rely heavily on private vehicles. Motor vehicle manufacturers and dealers have reported continuing sales particularly for motorcycles in the NCR during the two years of the pandemic, but there has been no commensurate expansion in road capacity. The traffic problem is coming back and will need a decisive response.
