A third of the world’s population has yet to receive a single dose of Covid-19 vaccine, including a shocking 83 per cent of all Africans, said the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday.
“This is not acceptable to me, and it should not be acceptable to anyone”, said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “If the world’s rich are enjoying the benefits of high vaccine coverage, why shouldn’t the world’s poor? Are some lives worth more than others?
He announced that to tackle future threats on a par with the virus that has now taken well over six million lives, and infected more than 483 million people, he said WHO was launching a new strategy to scale up genomic surveillance, for deadly pathogens that had “epidemic and pandemic potential”.

The COVID-19 end game?
“This is our third strategic plan for Covid-19, and it could and should be our last”, he said, laying out three possible scenarios for how the pandemic could evolve this year.
The most likely scenario is that the virus continues to evolve, but the severity of disease it causes reduces over time as immunity increases due to vaccination and infection, he stated.
“Periodic spikes in cases and deaths may occur as immunity wanes, which may require periodic boosting for vulnerable populations. In the best-case scenario, we may see less severe variants emerge, and boosters or new formulations of vaccines won’t be necessary.”
But, in the worst-case scenario, a more virulent and highly transmissible variant could emerge, sooner or later, and against this new threat, people’s protection against severe disease and death, from prior vaccination or infection, “will wane rapidly”, Tedros warned.
Addressing this situation would require significantly altering the current vaccines and making sure they get to the people who are most vulnerable to severe disease, he said.
The UN health agency chief laid out five strategic areas governments need to focus on, and invest in:
- Surveillance, laboratories, and public health intelligence
- Vaccination, public health and social measures, and engaged communities
- Clinical care for Covid-19, and resilient health systems
- Research and development, and equitable access to tools and supplies
- And finally, coordination, as the response transitions from emergency mode to long-term respiratory disease management.
“We have all the tools we need to bring this pandemic under control: we can prevent transmission with masks, distancing, hand hygiene and ventilation; and we can save lives by ensuring everyone has access to tests, treatments and vaccines”.
Equitable vaccination remains the single most powerful tool at the world’s disposal, to save lives, Tedros reminded.
Striving to vaccinate 70% of the population of every country remains essential for bringing the pandemic under control, with priority given to health workers, older people and other at-risk groups.

Crisis hotspots
Over 24 million people will need humanitarian assistance this year in Afghanistan, said Tedros, and they face displacement, drought, food insecurity and malnutrition, Covid-19, and many other health challenges.
Women and girls are especially at risk, he added, from lack of access to health services, and lack of access to education, describing last week’s failure to backtrack on opening middle and high schools for girls as “very troubling”.
For the millions whose lives and basic healthcare is at risk due to the raging conflict in northern Ethiopia, Tedros, whose family roots are in Tigray, welcomed last week’s declaration of a humanitarian truce in the region – between Tigrayan leaders and Government forces, in order to allow in vital aid – saying he hoped it would lead to the rapid restoration of public services, including electricity, telecommunications, banking and healthcare.

Tigray aid held up
“However, a week has passed since the truce was announced, but no food has been allowed into Tigray yet, he said. “Every hour makes a difference when people are starving to death. No food has reached Tigray since mid-December, and almost no fuel has been delivered since August of last year.
“The siege of six million people in Tigray by Eritrean and Ethiopian forces for more than 500 days, is one of the longest in modern history. Sustaining WHO’s response to all of these emergencies, from the COVID-19 pandemic, to Ukraine, Afghanistan, Ethiopia and more, requires the generosity of donors.”

Arrival of China-donated jabs helps Cambodia’s COVID-19 fight with more than 88 percent fully vaccinated
A plane carrying another batch of China-donated Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine arrived in the capital of Cambodia on Tuesday amid the country’s booster shots vaccination drive.
The arrival of the new batch was livestreamed on Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s official Facebook page, the state-run National Television of Cambodia (TVK), and the country’s online news provider Fresh News.
Ministry of Health Secretary of State Yok Sambath and Wu Guoquan, economic and commercial counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia, welcomed the arrival at the Phnom Penh International Airport.

The southeast Asian nation has so far received a total of almost 50 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines from three sources through bilateral procurement, the World Health Organization (WHO)’s COVAX Facility, and donations. Of the total, about 84 percent were bought from or donated by China.
To date, Cambodia has administered one dose of COVID-19 vaccines to 14.8 million people, or 92.64 percent of its 16-million population, the Ministry of Health said.
Of them, 14.01 million, or more than 88 percent, have been fully vaccinated with two required shots, 7.049 million, or 49 percent, have taken a third dose or booster shot, and 1.16 million or 7.2 percent, have got a fourth dose, the ministry added.
Director-general and spokesman of the Health Ministry Hok Kim Cheng said Chinese vaccines have helped Cambodia to achieve strong herd immunity and to revive its economy.

Myanmar’s Omicron cases rise to 146

ANGON (XINHUA) – The number of Omicron cases has risen to 146 after 28 new cases were reported in Myanmar, according to a statement from its Ministry of Health on Thursday night.
The ministry said the Omicron variant was found in 11 samples of returnees from Malaysia, six from the Philippines, three from Thailand, four from Singapore, two from India and one each from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Russia.
According to the ministry’s figures on Thursday, the number of COVID-19 infections has increased to 533,732 in Myanmar after 128 new Covid-19 cases were reported in the past 24 hours.
With one more death, the death toll has reached 19,307 as of Thursday.
A total of 511,798 patients have been discharged from hospitals.
Myanmar detected its first two COVID-19 positive cases in March 2020.

7. PHILIPPINES
PRESIDENTIAL Adviser for Entrepreneurship Jose Maria Concepcion 3rd said on Wednesday that he was in favor of giving incentives to citizens promptly getting their Covid-19 booster shot, saying it could increase the number of those getting their third dose and prevent another surge owing to the waning immunity of people who received just the basic two doses against the disease.
National Task Force Against Covid-19 special adviser Dr. Teodoro Herbosa said that instead of holding a national vaccination day, areas with low inoculation rate could hold special vaccination days for individuals who are yet to receive their primary doses or booster shots.

Rate of vaccination remains largely stagnant as booster shots increase
As at Jan 26, 88 per cent of the population have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and 91 per cent have received at least one dose.
In addition, the Health Ministry reported that 91 per cent of the eligible population have completed their full regime, or received two doses of Covid-19 vaccines.
Those eligible for booster doses are also being invited to receive their third shots. So far, 57 per cent of Singapore’s population have received boosters.
A summary of cases – those locally transmitted and those imported
The number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore has grown to 333,071, with 5,469 new cases reported on Jan 27.
Of the total cases, 1,898 were detected through polymerase chain reaction tests – comprising 1,537 local cases and 361 imported cases.
Another 3,571 cases were detected through antigen rapid tests and assessed by a doctor to have mild symptoms and of low risk. Of these, 3,553 were local and 18 were imported.
Meanwhile, another 3,109 patients were discharged. So far, a total of 311,589 patients have recovered from Covid-19.
The weekly infection growth rate is at 2.37.

The government on Sunday announced 8,444 more Covid-19 cases, maintaining the range of 6,000-9,000 infections per day since Jan 7, along with 12 new fatalities.
This compared with the 8,618 new cases and 19 fatalities reported on Saturday morning.
The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration said on Sunday afternoon that the 12 new fatalities were between the ages of 55 and 83, all Thai nationals.
Bangkok logged the most new deaths at two, followed by one each in Samut Prakan, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Sawan, Chumphon, Yala and Ayutthaya.
Of the local infections, 8,133 were confirmed at hospitals, 54 via mass testing and 21 among inmates. A further 236 infections were imported from abroad.
Bangkok had 1,271 new cases, followed by Samut Prakan (783), Chon Buri (408), Nonthaburi (403), Phuket (360), Si Sa Ket (224), Ubon Ratchathani (216), Pathum Thani (174), (Nakhon Ratchasima) 166, Samut Sakhon and Nakhon Si Thammarat (162).

On Saturday, 84,542 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals, including 546 seriously ill patients and 109 dependent on ventilators.

Since the pandemic started in early 2020, there have been 2,432,534 Covid-19 cases, including 209,099 cases this year, with 2,325,835 complete recoveries to date.
The accumulated death toll stood at 22,157 since the beginning of the pandemic.
The highest number of Covid-related fatalities in a 24-hour period was 312 recorded on Aug 13. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 18.

46,880 COVID-19 cases recorded on Monday

HÀ NỘI — There were 46,880 new COVID-19 infections recorded across Việt Nam on Monday.
The new cases bring the country’s tally to 2,834,373, with 39,605 deaths and 2,294,669 recoveries since the start of the pandemic.
Currently, 3,145 patients have severe infections with 13 on life support.
Out of the new daily transmissions, 33,851 were in the community.
The capital city of Hà Nội again registered the highest daily number of infections with 5,477.

Việt Nam reports over 15,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday
HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam reported 15,150 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, including 50 imported infections.
The new transmissions bring the national tally to 2,233,287.
The capital city of Hà Nôi still topped the country in terms of new cases with 2,806.
With an additional 115 COVID-19 related deaths announced on Saturday, Việt Nam’s COVID death toll is now 37,547 cases.
The country also announced that 12,353 patients made a full recovery, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,962,597.
Việt Nam has so far administered over 180.8 million doses of vaccines, including more than 79 million first doses and over 74 million second doses.
The country started a nationwide rapid vaccination campaign on Saturday. The drive, targeting all children and adults who still need vaccinations, will last through February 28. — VNS
