Lawyers acting for Vice President Leni Robredo are contemplating a lawsuit against those spreading disinformation and social media platforms that host these materials, according to One News.

In the Vice President’s weekly radio program on Sunday (June 19), Robredo’s spokesman Barry Gutierrez said legal action may be taken after her term of office ends on June 30.

This is in order to address the proliferation of fake news, which Gutierrez said is detrimental to democracy and public discourse. Any lawsuit would not only be for Robredo, but also for victims of disinformation on social media.

Robredo is considered the top target and biggest victim of online disinformation.

In the recently released Digital News Report 2022, Yvonne T. Chua of the University of the Philippines noted that country was “awash with disinformation” in the lead-up to the elections. Such disinformation mostly lionised president-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and demonised Robredo.

The report also noted that the Philippines is one of three countries where political misinformation (64 per cent) is more widely seen than unproven claims about the coronavirus (61 per cent).
