A video of former Philippine Vice President Leni Robredo delivering a speech has been viewed thousands of times in social media posts that claim she miscalculated the number of people she could accommodate at the launch of her NGO in July 2022. However, the clip is being circulated without the first part of her remarks, which shows she had correctly counted the total number of attendees. A representative from the NGO told AFP the figures Robredo cited were estimates the group had made.Ad by:

The clip of Robredo — who lost her bid for the presidency in May 2022 — was posted on Facebook on July 5.

Robredo can be heard saying: “We are going to accommodate 400 people. So 400 people every hour that’s 3,000 people today, right? Is my math correct? People might bash us again.”

The caption of the post reads in part: “My gosh… Leni’s Math! She’s so dumb! You’re going to accommodate 400 people in how many hours, Mamamink? You gave an answer but you didn’t mention the factors, there are 24 hours in a day!”

Mamamink” is a derogatory term often used by Robredo’s opponents to describe her.

Robredo has been a major target of online misinformation throughout her recent election campaign — often fanned by supporters of her rival, incumbent President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr — that aim to portray her as stupid.

Marcos Jr, son of the country’s former dictator, was sworn in as the Philippines’ new leader on June 30, completing a decades-long effort to restore the clan to the highest office.

The video was also shared alongside a similar claim on Facebook here and here, and on TikTok here and here.

Comments on the post suggest users believed the claim is genuine.

“400×24=3,000? She’s gone mad,” one user wrote.

“Wow, her energy seems to have no limit when it comes to speaking nonsense. She’s so dumb,” another commented.

However, the clip being shared is missing the first part of Robredo’s speech, where she said the event would only last seven hours.

Edited clip

Keyword searches found it was taken from the launch of Robredo’s Angat Buhay NGO, which was broadcast live online, including by online media outlet Rappler on July 1, 2022.

The NGO is a continuation of Robredo’s work as vice president and aims to become the “largest volunteer network in the Philippines” — focusing on health, education, disaster relief and rehabilitation, and community engagement, local newspaper the Manila Bulletin reported.

At the 27-minute and 14-second mark of the Rappler video, Robredo said: “From 10 o’clock this morning to five o’clock this afternoon, we are going to accommodate 400 people. So 400 people every hour, that’s 3,000 people today, right?”

The event was also broadcast live on her Facebook page on July 1, and the corresponding remarks can be heard at the 52-minute and 58-second mark.

Angat Buhay’s executive director Raphael Magno told AFP on July 11 that the figures Leni was quoting were just estimates the NGO had made for the event.

Magno said the event ran for seven hours from 10 am to 5 pm on July 1 and eight hours from 9 am to 5 pm the next day.

“Combining the 2 days, we have 15 hours. Divide 6,000 people (3,000 for each day) by that number, we have 400 persons per hour,” he said.

“Why anyone would bother to nitpick is beyond us.”

Local news organisation Philstar posted a tweet on July 1, echoing Robredo’s remarks during the event.

“Robredo says they will be accommodating 400 people every hour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the volunteer center,” the tweet reads.
