ARTS-CALLIGRAPHY | Indonesian calligraphers shine at first ever ASEAN khat contest

The first ever Khat Competition at the ASEAN Level organised by the Centre of Islamic Calligraphy and Arts Studies of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (PPKKI-YSHHB) saw Indonesian representatives take up the top three spots.

The announcement of the winners and prize presentation took place yesterday at the An-Naura Hall of Yayasan Complex in the capital and was attended by Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar in his capacity as the Deputy Chairman of the Yayasan Board of Directors.

Huda Purnawadi took the top spot with a score of 93.8 per cent and walked away with a BND3,000 cash prize, followed by Miftahul Huda in second and Muhammad Syamsudin in third.

Miftahul received BND2,000 and Muhammad Syamsudin BND1,000 while fellow Indonesians Taufikur Rahman and Agung Prabowo placed in fourth and sixth, winning the consolation cash prize of BND500 each.

Brunei representative Muhammad Nazir bin Haji Othman came in fifth and Malaysian Mohd Zulfikri bin Mohd Sobri was in seventh, both also walking away with BND500 each.

The ceremony began with welcoming remarks from Assistant Managing Director of Yayasan Haji Puasa bin Haji Jumat followed by comments from head of judges and President of the National Calligraphy Association of Malaysia Dr Abdul Rahman bin Haji Hamzah.

Opened for participants from ASEAN member countries, the competition ran from August 15 to October 28. Also part of the competition programme was a workshop on Islamic calligraphy facilitated by Dr Abdul Rahman and fellow competition judge from Indonesia Teguh Prestio.

The workshop was held at PPKKI-YSHHB in Rumah Semaun, Jalan Jerambak on December 21 and was attended by 24 participants.

Also in attendance yesterday were Attorney General Dato Seri Paduka Haji Ahmad bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa and Deputy Minister of the Department of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw in their capacities as members of Yayasan’s Board of Directors.

Others present were Permanent Secretary (Planning, Land Use and Environment) at the Ministry of Development Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak in her capacity as Acting Managing Director of Yayasan and representatives from the Malaysian High Commission and Indonesian Embassy in the Sultanate.
