Former Special Envoy to China Mon Tulfo has accused Martin Araneta, the brother of First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, of involvement in the smuggling and hoarding of onions.

In a series of posts on his Facebook page, From Where I Sit by Ramon Tulfo II, the Philippine Star columnist claimed Araneta is in cahoots with China-Philippines United Enterprises president Michael Ma, to control the supply of onions to jack up prices.

The cost of a kilo of onions soared to as much as P600 in late December 2022 to early January before easing in recent weeks after the government approved the importation of 21,060 metric tons of onions.

“Michael Ma, the alleged smuggler of onions, is president of China-Philippines United Enterprises (CPUE) which holds office on the same floor as that of Atty. Liza Araneta Marcos,” Tulfo said.

“Kasosyo ni Ma si Martin Araneta, nakakabatang kapatid ni First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos. Si Martin ay vice president ng CPUE,” he added.

Tulfo said he tipped off the First Lady about her brother’s alleged involvement in onion smuggling but his warning resulted in a falling out.

He shared the text message he sent to the First Lady, which supposedly read: “Ma’am. please don’t get mad at me. I’m just trying to help the BBM administration. Please check rumors that your brother Martin is involved in smuggling in the piers. Check before other reporters get hold of the rumors and have a field day. I’ve checked and it seems the rumors have basis. Why don’t you have Ariel Nepomuceno take over if you want a clean Bureau of Customs?”

Tulfo said he sent another follow up text message to the First Lady expressing his concern about her husband, who’s also the concurrent Agriculture Secretary.

“Ma’am, I told you about my concern for you when I told you— nagmamalasakit lang po— about your brother Martin’s name being linked to smuggling. I told you that the reports, which I first got from reliable sources, would blow up. I wish you had listened to me since we were collaborating before BBM was elected. I still have my heart for you and BBM,” his supposed text message to the First Lady read.
