ECONOMY | ASEAN aims to transform competition into collaboration in overall growth of region

.

Bearing the theme of ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth, Indonesia continues to promote the region’s relevancy to the world as a strategic investment partner for the future.

The coordinator of the Indonesian SDGs Secretariat expert, Yanuar Nugroho, delivered a speech in the Second ASEAN Ministerial Dialogue on Accelerating Actions to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Bangkok on Friday. ”

This is implemented with a strategy of maintaining ASEAN centrality, through a strong capacity to anticipate and respond to future challenges. The next strategy is to maintain regional strength as a driver of global economic growth,” Yanuar said.

The forum was also attended by the senior official meeting team on Rural Development and Poverty Eradication from the Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Ministry: Ivanovich Agusta, Fince Decima Hasibuan, Theresia Junidar, Sudarti, Minarni Marbun and Yoga Sidharta.

Indonesia’s chairmanship is expected to produce a Declaration of State Leaders regarding ASEAN as the Epicenter of Growth to be produced at the 43rd ASEAN Summit, highlighting priorities to tackle during the leadership term. Among the main priorities are to strengthen health architecture; to safeguard food security, including smoothly functioning supply chains and trade facilitation; to improve energy security, supporting the energy transition to clean and renewable energy, including the development of an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in the region; and to fortify financial stability in the face of external shocks. “

In the sociocultural dimension, the Epicentrum of Growth is translated into five main priorities, namely health, village development, workers, environment and inclusive development,” said Ivanovich.

“Indonesia will concretely realize specific areas of cooperation to support economic growth in the region. Among them are developing regional electric vehicle ecosystems, strengthening food security, increasing the use of Local Currency Transactions (LCT) and Payment Connectivity, strengthening ASEAN cooperation, cooperation on the protection of migrant workers and cooperation on the One Health initiative,” Yanuar further explained.

Ivanovich elaborated the act of cooperation would be realized in the formation of a village network, which contains a commitment to synergy in village development in ASEAN countries, so that it can contribute to the development of the community, and the achievement of the global and regional development agenda as a whole. It is hoped the partnership that will be fostered in the region will build trust and convey a message of a paradigm shift from competition to inclusive collaboration.

To implement this cooperation, Indonesia will organize a series of flagship events under the umbrella of the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum. Among them are the creative economy forums, youth dialogue on digital development for SDGs, infrastructure forums and the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit. The aforementioned forums will focus on fundamental issues of infrastructure development in the Asia-Pacific to support economic growth, highlighting connectivity, digital and green infrastructure and infrastructure financing, among other topics.
