While Cambodia is continuing to be heavily criticised and globally labelled as a hotbed for cross-border human trafficking, an Interior Ministry Secretary of State responsible for leading the combat against this form of international crime claimed in an exclusive interview with Khmer Times that the Kingdom, is being victimised by “biased reporting” by foreign media outlets and civil society and calls for more accuracy and evidence relating to all the attacks on the Kingdom’s so-called “incapability”.

Over the past three years, human trafficking crimes in Cambodia have gained increasing attention, particularly following the investigation by the Khmer Times into a Chinese syndicate detaining workers in 2021. Subsequent revelations of additional cases have led to Cambodia being branded as a hotspot for criminal activities.

The focal point of concern revolves around forced labour in the form of employment scams orchestrated by predominantly foreign-run syndicates. These groups entice individuals from various countries with lucrative job offers, bringing them to Cambodia only to ensnare them in various criminal operations, ranging from online gambling to call centres involved in scamming people both within and outside the country.

SINGAPORE – Singapore’s key exports returned to negative growth in December, driven by a continued slump in shipments of electronics.

Non-oil domestic exports (Nodx) fell 1.5 per cent from a year ago, compared with a 1 per cent increase recorded in November, data from Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG) showed on Jan 17.

November’s performance had marked a fragile return to growth following a 13-month decline in the Nodx.
