The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) took part in the economic ministers’ meeting attended by ministers and government officials from ASEAN member countries aimed at following up on progress and discussing priority objectives within the ASEAN economic integration agenda.

Tith Rithipol, Under Secretary of State of MoC, led the delegation to attend the First Meeting of the ASEAN Senior Economic Officials for the Fifty-Fifth Economic Ministers’ Meeting (SEOM1/55) held in Vientiane, capital of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) from January 18-20.

The SEOM1/55 theme ‘Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience’ was hosted by Lao PDR under the chairmanship of ASEAN 2024 with the purpose of monitoring the working progress and discussing key agendas of ASEAN economic integration including annual priorities 2024 and updated status of related ASEAN economic agreements.

The discussion also focused on priority economic deliverables (PEDs) under Lao PDR as the chairman this year, consideration of sectoral bodies’ reports, the preparations for the 30th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Retreat Meeting and the progress of the ASEAN dialogue partnerships.

According to the MoC press release, Rithipol also led the delegation to participate in the Sixteenth Meeting of the Committee of the Whole for the ASEAN Economic Community (16th CoW Meeting) and the 2nd Meeting of the ASEAN Focus Group on Global Value Chain (FG-GVC).

The meetings were participated by Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Cambodia.

Rithipol also took part in the twenty-sixth Cambodia-Lao PDR-Myanmar-Vietnam Senior Economic Officials Meeting (26th CLMV SEOM) which was organised by Lao PDR in Vientiane.

The 26th CLMV SEOM was conducted to review and discuss several priority issues on the agendas such as the Implementation of the CLMV Action Plan 2023-2024, the Implementation Plan of the Framework for CLMV Development and the Implementation of the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Work Plan IV 2021-2025.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established on August 8, 1967. The Member States are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Timor-Leste a new member joined in 2022. The ASEAN secretariat is based in Jakarta.

Based on the press release on Thursday, after the Kingdom became an ASEAN member in 1999 and a World Trade Organisation (WTO) member in 2004, the nation was merged into the ASEAN Free Trade Areas (AFTA) including the ASEAN plus FTA agreements with China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

These are the world’s biggest FTA to date as well as Cambodia’s bilateral FTAs with China, the Republic of Korea, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which are the world’s major economies as part of its efforts to go beyond its borders and strengthen its participation in the global supply chain.
