WATER ENGINEERING | Waste recycling scheme kicks off in Vangvieng

In a significant stride towards supporting Vangvieng district’s transformation into a greener, cleaner town, Global Green Growth Institute Lao PDR (GGGI) has achieved a noteworthy milestone with its Waste Recycling Bank project, which was marked on February 9 at Angel Cave in the district.
The ceremony saw the distribution of the first 35 out of 75 recyclable waste bins to businesses, focusing on those associated with tourism, such as restaurants, hotels, schools and temples.

The bins are specifically designed to facilitate the collection of recyclable waste generated by these establishments, with the ultimate goal of reducing landfill waste and promoting sustainable resource consumption.
Some 51 people attended this landmark event including representatives from the Lao government, GGGI, and various businesses.
The ceremony was co-chaired by the Governor of Vangvieng district, Mr Bounchanh Malavong, and Deputy Country Representative of GGGI Lao PDR, Ms Eva Diaz Ugena.
Also present were the Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr Bounphachan Bounthala, and representing the Department of Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr Phouthala Souksakhon.

Mr Bounphachan said “Waste separation and recycling are crucial for minimising landfill waste, conserving resources, and creating new value from discarded materials.
This not only benefits the environment but also positively impacts the tourism industry, enhancing its image and ensuring the long-term viability of this vital sector.”
Ms Eva Diaz Ugena said “As we move forward, let us continue to work hand in hand, fostering sustainable practices for a sustainable future, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come, a future where waste becomes a resource, and our environment thrives.”

Through this collaborative effort, GGGI is actively supporting the government’s initiatives and partnering with businesses to raise awareness about waste recycling, transforming waste into a valuable resource.
The initiative also aims to enhance Vangvieng’s environmental quality, preserving its natural beauty and fostering better public health in local communities.
