CAMBODIA: Prestigious Australian newspaper praises Cambodia, tells readers to “forget Thailand and Vietnam”

Shinta Mani Wild

The revered Sydney Morning Herald newspaper has praised Cambodia –  calling it “South-East Asia’s enticing new travel frontier”.

In a recent article, the news outlet stated that “Cambodia is a nation in fast-forward, its development on steroids as skyscrapers pierce its skies and new roads, infrastructure and airports.”

The SMH highlights the future for tourism in Cambodia, stating that “Today, there’s a youthful energy, optimism and determination largely driven by the tourist industry, which in 2022 earned a gross revenue of $US1.14 billion and sustained 12.4 per cent of total employment. And as luxury offerings become more prominent, so Cambodia is being perceived as a viable alternative to neighbouring Thailand or Vietnam, a new, enticing frontier for high-end travellers.”.

Resistance forces say they have abandoned an attempt to seize control of Kani, a town less than 40 miles north of Sagaing Region’s capital Monywa, after 10 days of fighting.

Groups opposed to Myanmar’s military junta began attacking regime targets in the town, including its police station, general administration office, and a heavily fortified pagoda, on March 2.

Although they came close to capturing it last week, the junta’s determination to hold onto the town ultimately thwarted their efforts, according to members of groups involved in the fighting.

“We couldn’t take it. We had to recall all of our units,” a commander of one of the groups said on Thursday, adding that the anti-junta forces withdrew from the town two days earlier.

SINGAPORE – The sixth and last concert American pop star Taylor Swift held in Singapore was on March 9, but police reports of e-commerce scams involving tickets to The Eras Tour are still coming in.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Aileen Yap, who is also assistant director of the police’s Anti-Scam Command (ASCom), said this in an exclusive interview with The Straits Times on March 11.

AC Yap said the reports lodged include some from victims who bought tickets from resellers and went to the National Stadium, only to discover that the tickets were fake and they could not enter the venue.
