NEW YORK, NEW YORK – JUNE 16: A woman walks by a smoke shop displaying a marijuana leaf in the window as authorities step up a crackdown on unlicensed smoke shops June 16, 2023 in New York City. The crackdown on illegal dispensaries comes after New York legalized recreational cannabis use in 2021 but only at approved stores that sell cannabis in a controlled and monitored environment. Since legalization, hundreds of businesses have opened across the city selling cannabis products illegally. Currently, about 10 legal pot shops operate in the state with the most in New York City and those caught selling illegally face fines up to $20,000 per day. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

BANGKOK – Thailand took another step in its plan to reclassify cannabis and hemp as narcotics again after a committee tasked with controlling illegal drugs agreed that they should not be used recreationally, the Bangkok Post reported.

All members of the committee agreed on the principle that cannabis should be used only for medical treatment, the report said, citing the public health ministry’s deputy permanent secretary Surachoke Tangwiwat as saying.

A majority agreed to put cannabis and hemp back on the narcotics list, the paper added.

The committee will submit its report to the Office of the Narcotics Control Board next week. A nod from the agency will then prompt the Food and Drug Administration to amend cannabis-related laws and provide criteria on usage of the plants.

The new rules are planned to take effect on Jan 1, 2025.

Thousands of weed dispensaries and other related businesses have opened across the country since Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalise cannabis in 2022.
