BERNAMA – Five people were killed and more than 30 passengers were reported injured when a tourist bus lost control and crashed into a road divider in Chaiya district, Surat Thani, in southern Thailand on Wednesday night.

In the incident that occurred around 7.30pm (local time) on Wednesday, Surat Thani Governor Thiruth Supaviboonpol stated that the chartered bus, with two drivers and 36 passengers, was travelling from Betong, Yala in southern Thailand to Bangkok when it veered off course. He said that one of the passengers had exited the bus prior to the accident due to personal reasons.

“The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Yayasan Kusonsattha Hospital in Surat Thani for documentation before being handed over to the victims’ families for burial,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Consul General in Songkhla, Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi, confirmed that no Malaysian citizens were involved in the accident.

“We have contacted the local authorities in Surat Thani, and the checks confirmed that no Malaysians were involved in the accident,” he said when asked for comment.
