ASEANEWS HEADLINE-SECURITY | Regional efforts made to enhance ASEAN border security
.
The member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have stepped up to strengthen border security in the region, focussing on issues related to human trafficking.
The move was made as human trafficking affairs leaders from all the ASEAN countries gathered on Wednesday during the 1st Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime Working Group on People Smuggling (1st SOMTC WG on PS).
Sok Reaksmey, Deputy Director of the Central Justice Department of the National Police Headquarters and an officer in the anti-human trafficking framework attended the meeting, held in Penang, Malaysia.
During the meeting, leaders from each ASEAN country discussed and exchanged views on past efforts, various strategies, best practices, and future implementation directions in combatting human smuggling within their own country and the broader ASEAN framework.

Additionally, the meeting also addressed the draft of a new work plan and a draft ASEAN declaration, which is set to be approved at the upcoming 25th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime.
Since its establishment in 1999, the SOMTC working group serves as a permanent mechanism for monitoring and reviewing the implementation of the ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children. They have held meetings at least once every year since then.
Apart from monitoring the implementation of the SOMTC Work Programme, especially with regard to the trafficking in person’s component, the SOMTC working group also facilitates exchange of information and experiences on issues related to trafficking in persons among the ASEAN Member States.
It considers ways and means to strengthen regional and international cooperation to prevent and combat trafficking in persons; and facilitates donor coordination and cooperation on projects within the ASEAN region in relation to trafficking in persons.
