MANILA, Philippines — A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Sarangani on Monday morning, June 8, killing residents and damaging buildings and triggering tsunami warnings across parts of the region.
Phivolcs said the offshore quake was caused by movement along the Cotabato Trench, the same structure linked to the deadly 1976 Moro Gulf earthquake and tsunami. The agency warned of possible aftershocks and tsunami risk, while the Coast Guard suspended watercraft operations in Davao Occidental.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon inspected repair works on the Bucana Bridge in Davao City, the Department of Public Works and Highways said.
Dizon said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had ordered repairs to be completed immediately to prevent delays for motorists and residents.
The bridge sustained only minor damage to its approach, including damaged guard rails and cement, which the agency has started repairing, the DPWH said in a news release.

Messages of support have also come from global and local celebrities, including Korean singer and 2NE1 member Sandara Park, Mexican singer Thalía and Thai actor Tawan Vihokratana.
Sandara, who began her showbiz career in the Philippines, said on Instagram that Mindanao holds a “special place” in her heart and that she was praying for the safety, strength and recovery of affected residents.
Thalía said on X that she was keeping those affected in her thoughts and prayers, while Tawan posted a message in Filipino expressing support and prayers for Filipinos’ safety.
Local celebrities Anne Curtis and Melai Cantiveros-Francisco, as well as the Miss Universe Philippines organization, also posted messages for affected communities.

General Santos Airport sustained damage, forcing some flights to be canceled or rerouted, the Office of Civil Defense said.
OCD’s Junie Castillo said some government officials going to affected areas had to travel by land or take a helicopter from Davao City to General Santos City.

The Office of Civil Defense is planning to set up a tent city for residents who cannot yet return home because of damage, aftershocks and safety concerns.
Spokesperson June Castillo said many residents have been staying in open spaces while authorities continue assessing whether homes and other structures are safe.

Initial infrastructure damage has reached around P900 million in Region 12 alone, the Office of Civil Defense said.
Civil Defense spokesperson Junie Castillo told GMA News’ “Unang Balita” that nine bridges collapsed and 19 roads were damaged, based on initial assessments.

The number of missing people has dropped to four, while the number of injured has risen to 479, the Office of Civil Defense said.
All four missing persons and 456 of the injured were recorded in Region 12, while 23 injured people were logged in Davao Region.
The OCD said 88,000 people have been affected, including 22,690 displaced residents. Damage to property was estimated at P15 million, with Region 12 reporting the highest losses.
The figures remain subject to change as validation is ongoing.

Angat Buhay said its disaster risk reduction and response team has arrived in Davao and was on its way to General Santos City.
Raffy Magno, executive director of Angat Buhay Foundation, said the team would support volunteers and coordinate with local partners on the ground.
Magno said the foundation has also been in touch with DSWD chief Rex Gatchalian as it works with stakeholders to help bring assistance to affected communities.

Initial assessments showed damage to nine bridges and 19 roads, with infrastructure damage estimated at more than P900 million, the Office of Civil Defense said.
Authorities also recorded 1,889 damaged houses, including around 1,500 that were totally destroyed.

The reported death toll has risen to 37 as of 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, the Office of Civil Defense said.
OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Mariano said 33 deaths were recorded in Soccsksargen, including 18 in Sarangani, 12 in General Santos City and 3 in South Cotabato. Four others were reported in Davao Region.
OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo told GMA News’ Unang Balita that most of the fatalities were hit by falling debris.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said Taiwan stands ready to provide assistance to the Philippines following the earthquake.

More than 2,000 people who evacuated because of the tsunami warning were still waiting for clearance to return home, Sarangani disaster chief Rene Punzalan told Agence France Presse.
Philippine authorities lifted the tsunami warning by mid-afternoon, but local officials were still assessing whether it was safe for residents to go back.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier urged residents in coastal areas to move to higher ground, saying: “Your life is more important than anything left behind.”

Fourteen people died in Glan, Sarangani after a landslide buried homes at the foot of a mountain, provincial disaster chief Rene Punzalan told Agence France Presse.
“The landslide happened immediately after the earthquake, so many lives were lost,” Punzalan said.
He said some areas had yet to report casualty figures, with communication still difficult because of power outages.

Rescue workers in General Santos City dug through the rubble of a popular grocery store chain as they tried to reach two employees believed to be trapped underneath, AFP reported.
Morphy Angcad, a 35-year-old security guard, told AFP that one of those trapped was his sister.
“I don’t want to leave this site until I see the body of my sister… (but) I’m hoping against hope that she is still alive,” he said.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson called for prayers for Mindanao, particularly for those killed or injured and for residents whose homes and properties were damaged.

Malacañang said government funds remain sufficient for rescue operations and assistance to affected residents, as the Marcos administration mobilized agencies involved in disaster response.
“The government funds for now are enough for rescue operations and to ease the impact of the disaster that happened today,” Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said in Filipino at a briefing.
Castro said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had ordered a “whole-of-government approach” and coordinated with the Office of Civil Defense, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Public Works and Highways and Department of Education.
