Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) chief Erick Thohir is jetting off to Zurich, Switzerland, on behalf of the government in a last-ditch effort to lobby world soccer governing body FIFA not to move the U-20 World Cup out of Indonesia, as President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo seeks to contain an intraparty revolt against Israel’s participation in the youth tournament.
In a video statement on Tuesday, the President said Israel’s participation in the event would in no way change Indonesia’s support for Palestine, adding that politics should be separate from soccer. “
I can assure you that Israel’s participation [would not change] our foreign policy stance toward Palestine, since our support for Palestine has always been solid and strong,” Jokowi said.

Indonesia Indonesia’s license to host the FIFA U-20 World Cup is in serious jeopardy as the fallout from local protests over Israel’s participation in the youth tournament spreads internationally, with other countries ready to pounce on the opportunity should the world soccer governing body look elsewhere.
The Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) announced on Sunday that FIFA had canceled the tournament’s group stage draw indefinitely, after some regional chapters of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) lent their voices to protests over Israel’s presence in the tournament.
The Israeli national team qualified for the U-20 last year without appreciable political opposition in Indonesia or elsewhere.
Now that there is a real threat that FIFA may move the competition elsewhere, several nations have stepped up to offer their services.

Mayor of Surakarta, Central Java, Gibran Rakabuming Raka said the city was ready to take the place of Bali to host the draw for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup following the rejection from Bali Governor I Wayan Koster to stage the event, scheduled for next week.
Gibran, the eldest son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, said he was waiting for a decision from the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) or the world’s governing body for soccer, FIFA, should they agree on a change of venue. ”
If there’s an order from the PSSI or the Youth and Sports Minister, I am ready. But we’re waiting to hear from the PSSI or FIFA,” Gibran was quoted by Tempo.co as saying.
