Ram fighting is part of Sundanese culture. To preserve it, fights have been held regularly in Rancabango village, Tarogong Kaler, Garut, West Java.

Three hundred of the most beautiful rams in the province fought for Garut’s strongest sheep title on Aug. 4.

Ram owners take great pride in their sheep. Worth even hundreds of millions of rupiah, the animals require exceptionally careful grooming. There are three weight classes in the competition, which is overseen by one referee and four judges. To win, a ram must collect points in such criteria as good health, boldness in attacking, the beauty and condition of its horns, the type of its wool, etc.
