TOURISM: MANILA-THE BONIFACIO Global City (BGC)- One-way scheme on BGC roads starts
THE BONIFACIO Global City (BGC) management is set to implement a one-way traffic scheme in key roads to ease frequent traffic gridlocks in the business district.
The one-way scheme seeks to address the large volume of vehicles that go to and pass BGC.
In the new traffic scheme, a one-way loop will go from 30th Street, left to Rizal Drive, then left to 28th Street, and left again to 11th Avenue.
A second one-way loop will go from 9th Avenue, then left on 34th Street, left to 8th Avenue and into 7th Avenue, then left into Federation Drive linking back to 9th Avenue. Drivers on 7th Avenue may also exit at McKinley Parkway.
“We are hoping to make the transition to the new one-way scheme as smooth as possible. In the past few weeks, BGC has really stepped up its information drive to let motorists know of the changes being implemented,” Jun Galvez, Bonifacio Estate Services Corp. general manager, said in a statement.
Additional marshals and on-ground signages were deployed to guide motorists on the change in traffic flow. BGC also teamed up with a navigation app, Waze, for traffic rerouting.
BGC is rapidly developing with the sprouting of condominiums, offices, shopping malls, entertainment centers, museums, and educational institutions, which attract traffic from all over Metro Manila.
Also, a large volume of traffic between C-5, EDSA and Makati passes through BGC, which creates congestion during rush hour.
Galvez said the scheme would maximize the width of the streets and reduce conflict between vehicles and pedestrians at intersections.
“A one-way traffic flow is the most efficient traffic circulation scheme for BGC’s street grid network because it maximizes the width of the street that is available for traffic, reduces the conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians at intersections, and minimizes the time that vehicles and pedestrians are stopped at traffic signals,” he said.
The BGC statement added that a similar scheme was implemented in the Makati central business district “which reduced traffic congestion and improved travel time in the area.” The general manager said it was expected that the strategy in BGC would produce the same results.
The management said it would also continue its wheel clamping and towing operations to keep major streets free of obstructions. Motorists may find parking spots through the BGC app downloadable on Android or iOS devices.
