Manila: ASEAN – Workers unhappy with long ASEAN summit holiday
.
MANILA, Philippines — The long holiday break during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit next week is making workers unhappy.
Federation of Free Workers vice president Julius Cainglet said workers, particularly those paid on a daily basis, are disappointed because they will not have income for five days.

“The long holiday is disadvantageous for the daily-paid workers, especially at this time when they would rather work continuously so they can save money for the Christmas season,” Cainglet explained.
He also noted that because of the holiday break, many of the daily-paid workers will not even be able to take on extra work since most Metro Manila residents are on vacation.
The government should have hired daily-paid workers for ASEAN-related activities for them to earn money, according to Cainglet.
“What good is our hosting that would get high praises from our neighboring counties in the subregion if it will result in the deprivation of income for workers?” he asked.
