YOUTH as agents of change must realise their role in the development of the nation and make use of their knowledge for the betterment of the community, said the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of the seventh intake of the National Service Programme (PKBN) at the PKBN Training Camp in Batu Apoi in the Temburong District yesterday, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof expressed hope that the 100-day programme will teach the participants how to use knowledge as a tool to develop themselves and the country.

The seventh intake has 379 trainees – the largest number to attend the programme to date – and comprises 261 male and 118 female participants.

“Through the training and specific exposures during the PKBN programme, the trainees can become good leaders capable of guiding their family members and friends and helping them stay away from social evils,” the minister said.

To ensure that the PKBN continue to remain relevant, he said that “the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), together with its strategic partners such as the National Service Division, will strive for improving the quality of training, making sure that the investment made is worthwhile towards achieving the objectives of Vision 2035”.

The minister urged the trainees to sincerely utilise their wisdom, experience, expertise and leadership in carrying out the duties and responsibilities entrusted upon them.

Following the reading of oath, the minister mingled with the trainees of the new intake and their family members.

Also in attendance at the ceremony were YB Haji Emran bin Haji Sabtu, member of the Legislative Council; Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, Permanent Secretary at the MCYS; First Admiral Pengiran Dato Seri Pahlawan Norazmi bin Pengiran Haji Muhammad, Acting Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces; Assistant Commissioner of Police Pengiran Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Metali, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police; and other senior officials.

PKBN is a youth development programme that carries the aim of producing youths who are responsible, disciplined, dynamic, united, courageous and capable of contributing to the country’s socio-economic development and defence.

Implemented under the MCYS, the goal of PKBN is to enhance the spirit of patriotism, commitment and resilience among youths in addition to strengthening the understanding contained in the constitution of the state and the national philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).
